Florida principal tried to send $100K to scammer posing as Elon Musk
A principal at a Florida charter school thought she could secure a multi-million donation from billionaire Elon Musk by sending him a check for $100,000 out of the school account.
One problem: It wasn’t Elon Musk, but an online scammer.
WESH reported that the principal, Jan McGee, said during a school board meeting this week that she had been in communication with “Elon Musk” for several months in hopes of securing millions for the school in exchange for an “investment” of $100,000.
The school business manager learned of the scam and canceled the check before it could be cashed. Nevertheless, other administrators said McGee had been warned multiple times she was being scammed.
McGee had been the principal of Burns Science & Technology since the school opened in 2011, according to WESH. It’s located in the Oak Hill community in Volusia County, northeast of Orlando.
After other complaints were laid out by other administrators against McGee, she resigned.
