Calvin Ridley jumps on 0 after NFL rule change

NFL team owners approved a rule proposal on Tuesday that will make zero a legal jersey number for some players, and the first to announce the switch to the new digit was Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Calvin Ridley.

The former Alabama standout had worn No. 18 throughout his four NFL seasons.

At the league’s annual meeting, NFL owners passed a rule change that will allow any player who is not an offensive lineman or a defensive lineman to wear No. 0 on his jersey.

The zero was outlawed as an eligible number in 1973, when the NFL switched to standardized numbering by position. The most recent player to wear No. 0 in an NFL regular-season game was safety Nobert Logan, who had zero on his jersey during 13 games with the New Orleans Saints in 1967.

Center Jim Otto wore No. 00 through 1974 and wide receiver Ken Burrough wore No. 00 through 1981 in the NFL because they had that number when the standardization rules were passed.

Ridley could quickly adopt No. 0 because he did not join the Jaguars until March 6, when the NFL lifted an indefinite suspension imposed in 2022 for betting on football games, and Jacksonville had not announced a number for the wide receiver, who played the 2018 through 2021 seasons with the Atlanta Falcons.

An NFL player wishing to change his number for the upcoming season must buy the existing inventory of retail-ready jerseys with his old number – a price tag that can pass $1 million. If a player wants to change his number for a following season, he can do so without charge with proper notification to the NFL.

With the addition of zero, the legal numbers by position in the NFL include:

Quarterbacks: 0-19

Running backs, fullbacks, tight ends and wide receivers: 0-49 and 80-89

Offensive linemen: 50-79

Defensive linemen: 50-79 and 90-99

Linebackers: 0-59 and 90-99

Defensive backs: 0-49

Kickers and punters: 0-49 and 90-99
