Strong storms possible today and Friday in Alabama

South Alabama is facing yet another chance for isolated severe storms today, according to forecasters.

And there could be yet another round of storms to come by the end of the workweek.

There will be a Level 1 out of 5 severe weather risk for south Alabama today. Areas just north of Troy and Greenville and southward all the way to the Gulf could see isolated severe storms today, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

Strong to severe storms were moving across southern Alabama on Tuesday morning, and several severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued. More storms will be possible through this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Mobile.

More large hail and damaging winds are the main concerns with any stronger storms.

The weather service in Mobile expects storms to increase in number this morning ahead of a cold front.

The threat for severe weather will come to an end after the front moves through, forecasters said.

Storms aren’t expected in north-central or north Alabama today.

However, that may change by Friday, when yet another weather system is expected to approach Alabama.

Another round of overnight storms will be possible on Friday into Saturday for the areas in yellow in Alabama.

The Storm Prediction Center has added a risk for severe storms for parts of north and west Alabama for Friday.

The weather service said the timing for that round of storms will likely be Friday night into Saturday morning.

This weather system could bring the threat for tornadoes as well as damaging winds, hail and heavy rain.

The weather service office in Birmingham has an even wider area in central Alabama included in the threat for severe weather on Friday:

Adjustments to the severe weather risk area, threat level and timing will likely happen this week, so keep up with forecast updates, especially closer to Friday. And make sure you have a way to awaken you if storms threaten during the nighttime hours.

Calmer weather is expected over the second half of the weekend following Friday’s storms.
