Nashville school shooting latest: What we know about Audrey Hale, video released

Vigils took place across Nashville on Monday night to grieve after the deadly shooting at The Covenant School.

The Belonging Co Church held a public prayer for its community, with Lead Pastor Henry Seeley saying some of the families who attend the church also send their children to the school, NBC affiliate WSMV reported.

“It’s challenging honestly. There’s been a lot of tears today,” Seeley said. “The Bible says to mourn with those who mourn and to weep with those who weep and that is why we wanted to come together tonight.”

A former student shot through the doors of a Christian elementary school Monday and killed three children and three adults after elaborately planning the massacre by drawing out a detailed map and conducting surveillance of the building, police said.

Police identified the shooter as a 28-year-old woman and eventually identified the person as Audrey Hale. Then at a late afternoon press conference, the police chief said that Hale was transgender. After the news conference, police spokesperson Don Aaron declined to elaborate on how Hale currently identified.

The former student who shot through the doors of a Christian elementary school in Nashville and killed three children and three adults had drawn a detailed map of the school, including potential entry points, and conducted surveillance of the building before carrying out the massacre. Metropolitan Nashville Police Chief John Drake did not say exactly what drove the shooter to open fire Monday morning at The Covenant School before being killed by police. But he provided examples of the shooter’s elaborate planning for the bloodshed, including a manifesto and other writings that police are going over.

Video released Monday by Nashville police appears to show the shooter enter and walk through the hallways of The Covenant School with a raised rifle.

NBC News reports the Nossi College of Art & Design has said the shooter was a 2022 graduate of the school, which is based in Nashville.

Audrey Hale “was a talented artist and a good student” during her time at the college, the school said in a statement.

A search of the Nashville school shooting suspect’s residence Monday turned up two more firearms, described as shotguns, at the residence. At least one of those was described by police as a “sawed-off shotgun,” some of which can be illegal, depending on the exact measurements and whether the owner has filed federal paperwork.

Police said Hale, 28 had a map of The Covenant School, which appeared to include information on entry and exit points.
