North Alabama spring roundup: Bob Jones runs baseball record to 23-4

Braden Booth threw a five-inning one-hit shutout for the second-ranked Patriots in the second of a pair of games at home on Saturday as Bob Jones blanked Winfield 11-0. Bob Jones improved to 23-4 on the season.

Earlier on Saturday, Bob Jones beat Buckhorn 7-5 in extra innings as Sam Mitchell ripped a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth.

On Friday, the Patriots beat Cullman 11-4 in a road game. Mitchell struck out eight in a complete game effort. On the week, Mitchell was 3-for-8 with two home runs, a double and four RBIs. He finished with a 1.250 slugging percentage and a .375 average.

Reece Cato was 5-for-8 (.625) with eight RBIs in the three games with a stolen base and two runs scored. Aiden Doyle went 4-for-6 with a home run and a double with five RBIs and two runs scored.

BOYS

BASEBALL

Huntsville 10, West Limestone 0: The Crimson Panthers (13-4) scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in the rout of West Limestone at home on Thursday.

Huntsville’s Chase Cartron struck out 10 in six innings, allowing three hits and walking two.

Galen Evans went 3-for-4 and scored a run for the Panthers. Justin Whitaker was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, a run scored and had one stolen base. Riley Moss was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Stone Lawless and Amaree Jabbar were both 1-for-2.

On Tuesday, the Panthers earned a 2-0 win over Priceville on Senior Night. Tyce Moody led Huntsville at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs and a stolen base.

Brody King got the win to improve to 4-0 for Huntsville. King struck out five, walked six and allowed one hit over five innings. Evans earned a save, allowing one hit with three strikeouts, no runs and no walks in two innings.

New Hope 13, DAR 2: New Hope’s Charlie Harbin smacked a pair of doubles and drove in two runs in the road win at Grant on Saturday. Harbin finished 3-for-6 at the plate.

Layton Pohl was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs for New Hope. Pohl earned the win, pitching four innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts with a walk.

Grant Maples, who was 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, pitched three innings in relief. He struck out three and allowed one hit.

James Clemens 3, Russellville 2: The Jets pushed across a run in the eighth to escape with a win on the road at Russellville on Saturday. James Clemens (16-7) out-hit the Golden Tigers 10-8 and overcame three errors to one for Russellville.

Andrew Lawrence got the win in 3.1 innings of relief, striking out five and walking one, giving up three hits and no runs.

Nathan Guyse went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for James Clemens. Aidan Cook was 2-for-4 and Hayden Markfort was 1-for-1 with a run scored and a pair of walks. Brooks Kulavich and Satchel Wheeler had an RBI each for the Jets.

Brandt Cummings was 2-for-4 for Russellville with a run scored. Logan White went 2-for-3 and Cayden Johns was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Neyland Baker doubled in four at-bats.

Cummings was saddled with the loss in 1.1 innings in relief of Johns. Cummings allowed one run on two hits. He struck out one and walked one. Cummings allowed eight hits, struck out three with six walks over six innings.

On Friday, James Clemens blanked Oakland (Tenn.) 5-0 in a road game in Murfreesboro. Three Jets combined on a one-hitter in the win. Starter and winner Luke Davenport struck out nine and walked one with the one hit over five innings. Matthew Nitcavic and Preston Chenowith threw one inning apiece. Nitcavic had one strikeout while Chenowith closed out the game with a pair of strikeouts.

The Jets had seven hits with Cook finishing 2-for-3.

Madison County 9, East Limestone 3: The Tigers scored five runs in the fourth inning to push a 2-1 lead to 7-1 on the way to the win on Saturday. Madison County improved to 12-9 on the season.

Memphis Scott went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI with three runs scored for Madison County. Andre Towers and Jake Thornton had two RBIs apiece. Towers was 2-for-4 with a double while Thornton was 1-for-1. Nicholas Sharp was 2-for-4 in the win.

Chris Fearnside earned the win with one inning of relief. He struck out two and allowed a pair of hits.

East Limestone scored a run in the first and a pair in the fifth.

Leyton Coffman went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Charlie Ray Eslick was saddled with the loss, giving up seven runs – six earned – on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 3.2 innings.

Hartselle 10, Enterprise 6: The top-ranked Class 6A Tigers out-hit Class 7A No. 8 Enterprise in the second game of a three-team double-header on Saturday. Hartselle overcame three errors and used a big third inning in the win.

Enterprise broke to a 5-1 lead after one inning, but Hartselle scored five in the third to get the lead. The Wildcats tied the game with a run in the fifth, but Hartselle scored a pair in the bottom of the inning and tacked on two more in the sixth.

Hartselle’s Coleman Mizell ripped a pair of home runs, drove in four runs and scored two with his 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Peyton Steele also smacked a homer and drove in two runs.

Cade Miles – the third of five pitchers for Hartselle – got the win, with four strikeouts and no walks. Miles allowed one earned runs on three hits in two innings. Jack Smith earned a save, striking out one and walking one in one inning.

Kyle Hakel took the loss for Enterprise, allowing two earned runs on four hits in 1.2 innings of relief.

Cayden Boutwell and Tysen Cole had doubles for the Wildcats. Cole was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Earlier on Saturday, fourth-ranked Class 7A Central-Phenix City edged Hartselle 3-2. Eli Tidwell took the loss for the Tigers, allowing two earned runs on four hits over six innings. He struck out four and walked three.

Auburn 11-4, Hartselle 9-3: Auburn swept a Friday double-header at home on Friday. Seth Payne earned the win in relief in Game 1, pitching a scoreless and hitless final two innings.

Jace Norton had a grand slam home run for the winners and Henry Allen doubled while going 2-for-5 at the plate. Michael Daniel was 2-for-4 and Silas Mason was 2-for-2.

Landon Blackwood and Coleman Mizell homered for Hartselle. Peyton Steele and Eli Tidwell had doubles in the loss.

Andrew Coleman took the loss in relief, allowing four runs – two earned – in 2.2 innings. He struck out three and walked three.

In Game 2, Michael Daniel had a three-run home run and Tanner Waldrop had an RBI single for Auburn.

Cooper Hardee was the winning pitcher in relief, allowing one hit with three strikeouts and two walks in two innings.

Nick Chumley was saddled with the loss, allowing four earned runs with seven strikeouts and three walks in five innings.

Coleman Mizell had a two-run homer and Peyton Steele had a double for Hartselle. Steele was 2-for-3 at the plate.

SOCCER

McCallie 3, Grissom 1: Grissom went 1-1-1 in to finish second in the top division of the Smoky Mountain Cup tournament in Gatlinburg, Tenn. The Tigers are 10-1-3 on the season and ranked second in Class 7A.

The Tigers fell to the team from Chattanooga after beating Westminster, Ga., 2-1 and tying Union, Okla., 2-2.

McCallie scored two early first-half goals to lead 2-0 at the half.

Grissom opened tournament play with the win over Westminster. Jorge Roca got the first goal of the match off an assist from Aubrey Tedesco. The Tigers pushed their lead to 2-0 in the second half when Diego Ojeda scored off another Tedesco assist.

Tulsa’s Union High led 1-0 in Grissom’s second game on Thursday. Grissom tied the game by forcing an own goal from Bryant Colbert’s cross.

Union went up 2-1 in the second half before Bryant Colbert’s cross found Ojeda at the top of the box to equalize things at 2-2.

GIRLS

SOFTBALL

Priceville 4, New Hope 1: The Bulldogs won the New Hope tournament with four wins over Friday and Saturday play, improving to 24-5 on the season.

Priceville’s Elizabeth Murphy allowed no hits over four innings in the final, striking out three and walking one. She was 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs in the Saturday win.

Wrozlie Barnett was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored for the Bulldogs. Katee King went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Bentley Black was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Also on Saturday, the Bulldogs edged Madison Academy 4-3 as Black was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Maddie Black got the win, allowing three earned runs on three hits. She struck out four and walked three in four innings.

Cat Schreiber had a home run and a pair of RBIs for Madison Academy.

Priceville beat Rockvale, Tenn., 3-1 as Murphy struck out four, walked three and allowed two hits in five innings.

On Friday, Priceville beat Huntland, Tenn., 6-1. Murphy gave up six hits in four innings, striking out two and walking one. Black was 3-for-3 with a triple and a double with four RBIs.

Priceville also beat Rockvale 10-2 on Friday, as Allie Denson went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Bentley Black was 2-for-3 with a pair of triples and five RBIs. Darby Thigpen was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Maddie Black struck out four and walked two, giving up two hits in four innings.

Madison Academy 4, Fyffe 0: The Mustangs (15-6) finished 2-2 in the tournament at New Hope. Cat Schreiber struck out 11 for Madison Academy over five innings in the win. Abby Boyd went 3-for-3 with a home run.

Huntland, Tenn., blanked Madison Academy 2-0 as Schreiber struck out four in four innings pitched. Memphis Houston went 2-for-2 at the plate.

The Mustangs beat Rockvale, Tenn., 2-1 as Schreiber struck out eight in five innings. Maddie Taylor notched an RBI for Madison Academy.

Lawrence County 8, Vernon Hills (Ill.) 3: The Red Devils scored two runs in the first inning and three in the second and third of the four-inning game to earn the win over Vernon Hills.

Raegan Johnson went 1-for-1 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Adagrace Calhoun and Andee McKay were both 2-for-2 with an RBI apiece. McKay had a double. Alexis LouAllen and Bella Cross also had RBIs for Lawrence County.

Cross struck out seven, walked two and gave up two earned runs in the win.

Hazel Green 6, Nolensville (Tenn.) 2: The Trojans went 3-1 to improve to 13-8-1. Besides the win over Nolensville, Hazel Green beat Baylor (Tenn.) 5-2 and Franklin County (Tenn.) 13-1. The Trojans lost 13-2 to Summertown (Tenn.).

Allie Cole smacked two homers and a double and had four RBIs. Raegan Wall finished with a home run and four RBIs with a triple and a double for the Trojans. Mason Quinnie batted .500 with five RBIs with a double. Mariah Bazile had a home run, a double and six RBIs.

Kailey Hyatt finished the quartet of games with a 1.00 ERA with five strikeouts. Quinnie finished with a 2.00 earned run average. She struck out two and walked four. Emma Moody struck out five with three walks.
