Troy has made official what was widely reported last week, that head football coach Jon Sumrall has agreed to a new contract through the 2026 season.

AL.com and other media outlets reported on the new deal last Friday, which school officials announced Monday. The Trojans went 12-2 and won the Sun Belt Conference championship in 2022, Sumrall’s first season as head coach.

“When we appointed Coach Sumrall in December 2021, we challenged him to return Troy football to the top of the Sun Belt Conference,” Troy chancellor Jack Hawkins said. “It didn’t take long, … Coach Sumrall’s leadership will take our football program to even greater levels of success. I am certain the best is yet to come for Troy University football.”

Contract terms were not disclosed, but the new deal reportedly contains a raise and additional funding for staffing. Sumrall made $825,000 in 2022, according to USA Today’s Coaches Salary database.

The 40-year-old Sumrall previously coached at Troy as assistant head coach, linebackers coach and special teams coach from 2015-17. He has also worked as an assistant at San Diego, Tulane, Ole Miss and Kentucky (his alma mater), serving as inside linebackers coach and later co-defensive coordinator from 2019-21 before returning to the Trojans.

“Last year was an amazing accomplishment for everyone associated with Troy football and was the product of relentless effort from our players and staff, athletic administration and university leaders,” Sumrall said. “Ginny and I are very thankful to Chancellor Hawkins and Athletics Director Brent Jones for believing in our vision and to the Troy community for the love and support they continue to show this program. This represents an investment in the future of Troy football for our players, coaches and staff.”

Troy’s 2022 season was the best in the program’s FBS history, and was capped by a 45-26 victory over Coastal Carolina in the Sun Belt Conference championship game, and an 18-12 win over UT San Antonio in the Cure Bowl. The Trojans were No. 19 in the final AP poll, the first time they finished the season with a national ranking since moving to the FBS level in 1999.

Troy had endured three straight losing seasons prior to Sumrall’s arrival, but made a near-immediate turnaround. The Trojans lost two of their first games, then won 10 straight — including a 10-6 victory over in-state rivals South Alabama in the annual “Battle for the Belt” on Oct. 20.

“The announcement of a new contract for Coach Sumrall represents a continued commitment to our student-athletes and football program while emphasizing the importance that Troy University athletics places on being a leader in the Sun Belt Conference and FBS,” Jones said.

Troy is currently immersed in spring football practice, with the annual T-Day spring game set for April 15.
