Walmart plans a handful of store closures: Here’s the list
Walmart is closing a handful of stores described by the retail giant as “underperforming.”
Fifteen stores in 11 states and Washington, D.C., are set for closure, Business Insider reported. Two of the 15 stores are pick-up only locations. In addition, Walmart is laying off hundreds of workers at five e-commerce fulfillment centers.
In an earlier statement, Walmart said it was closing some stores after a “thorough review process.”
“This decision was not made lightly and was reached only after a thorough review process,” a Walmart spokesperson said. “We have nearly 5,000 stores across the U.S. and unfortunately some do not meet our financial expectations. While our underlying business is strong, these specific stores haven’t performed as well as we hoped.”

Walmart is also cutting jobs at e-commerce fulfillment centers in Jersey; Fort Worth, Texas; Davenport, Florida; Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; and China, California. Many of the eliminated positions were evening or weekend shifts.
“We recently adjusted staffing levels at our (fulfillment centers) in select markets to better prepare for the future needs of customers,” Walmart said in a statement. “This decision was not made lightly, and we’re working closely with affected associates to help them understand what career options may be available at other Walmart locations.”
The New York Post reported employees will be paid for 90 days as Walmart attempts to place them in jobs at other locations.
