Charles Barkley: Michael Jordan’ greatness doesn’t give him ‘right to be a jerk’
Like his stints on “Inside the NBA,” Charles Barkley didn’t mince words Sunday night during an interview with “60 Minutes.”
The former Auburn and NBA star spoke specifically about his relationship with Michael Jordan – which is nonexistent – and the sensitivity of Kevin Durant.
Anyone who knows Barkley knows that his opinions don’t always go over well with those he is talking about. Durant, a perennial all-star, once said of Barkley, “I don’t know why they still ask for this idiot’s opinion.”
“He’s very sensitive,” Barkley said of Durant. “Great player. He’s part of that generation who think he can’t be criticized. He’s never looked in the mirror and said, ‘Man, was that a fair criticism?”
In 2022, Barkley said that old guys think Durant “piggybacked” his way to two NBA championships with the Golden State Warriors after spending his first nine seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“But if you go back and look at his career, as the best player and being the leader that all goes with that, he’s been an abject failure,” Barkley said in 2022.
Barkley also said Durant is a type of person that can’t be pleased.
“He seems like a miserable person, man. I call him Mr. Miserable, he’s never going to be happy. Everybody’s given him everything on a silver platter,” Barkley said. “He was the man in Oklahoma City, they loved him, he owned the entire state. He bolts on them and wins back-to-back championships (with Golden State), and he’s still not happy. Then he goes to Brooklyn, they give him everything he wants and he’s still miserable.”
When asked if today’s players are a little more sensitive to criticism, Barkley replied Sunday, “That would be an understatement.”
Barkley also told “60 Minutes” correspondent Jon Wertheim that Jordan broke off the friendship over comments Barkley made about the Charlotte Hornets. Jordan is the owner of the NBA team which, at the time, had been struggling to win games.
Jordan’s greatness doesn’t give him “the right to be a jerk,” Barkley said.
“What I said, I don’t think he has enough people around him that are gonna tell him, ‘No,’” Barkley said. “And he got really offended, and we haven’t spoken.”
Barkley said he can’t hold his friends to a different standard.
“I’m gonna do my job,” he said. “Because I have zero credibility if I criticize other people in the same boat and not criticize my best friend.”
Barkley said Jordan’s greatness doesn’t give him “the right to be a jerk.”
The Leeds native said it is up to Jordan to repair their relationship.
“He got my number,” Barkley told Wertheim.
