March Madness: Charles Barkley calls college basketball ‘a travesty and disgrace’
Charles Barkley called college basketball a travesty and a disgrace during an interview with “60 Minutes” on Sunday night.
The comments may seem odd considering the former Auburn star and NBA analyst has been a part of Turner Sports’ NCAA tournament coverage.
With the country in full March Madness mode and the Final Four right around the corner, Barkley said he is angry.
“The college game is a travesty and disgrace,” Barkley said. “I’m so mad now about how we can mess up something so beautiful. We can’t pay all these players.”
Barkley, of course, is talking about name, image and likeness. In short, he hates NIL.
“In the next three to five years, we’re going to have 25 schools that will dominate the sport because they can afford the players. And the schools that can’t afford or won’t pay the players are going to be irrelevant.”
It’s that kind of take, according to “60 Minutes,” that has people tuning in to hear Barkley on a nightly basis.
“I think they know that I’m gonna be honest,” Barkley said when asked why people listen to him. “I’m gonna be fair. I don’t have a hidden agenda. Not many people on TV that you can say that about.”
