Mobile volunteer football coach caught selling drugs, police say

A volunteer assistant at Mobile’s Vigor High School has been charged with selling drugs on or near the campus.

Herbert Burrell, 38, was taken into custody Thursday at the school, where he was a volunteer assistant for the Wolves’ football team, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, which made the arrest.

Deputies handcuffed Burrell at the school before he was transported to the Mobile County Metro Jail, where he remained as of Friday afternoon, charged with distribution of a controlled substance, use/possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and possession of a controlled substance.

According to the MCSO, when Burrell was on campus, he would receive communication from someone seeking to purchase drugs, travel to a location where he kept the drugs, then return to complete the transaction.

It was unclear whether he actually sold the drugs in the school parking lot or just off property, according to MCSO spokesperson Lori Myles.

As a volunteer, Burrell was not an employee of the school.
