South Alabama Spring Roundup: Foley claims wins at Lyon Newell event

A.J. Prim and Emily Wolf led Foley to wins in the boys’ and girls’ divisions in the Lyon Newell Charity Throws Meet held at UMS-Wright’s Erwin S. Cooper Stadium on Wednesday.

“This was definitely a surprise,” said Foley throws coach Garrison Williams. “Our kids showed up and had personal records. We had personal records when it mattered most.”

The meet is held annually in the memory of Lyon Newell, a state champion thrower in track & field as well as an outstanding football player. Newell passed away in 2002. Proceeds from the meet went to charity.

Davidson’s Mose Piper had a strong performance on Wednesday, winning the boys’ javelin with a personal best of 176-6. Piper, who also plays first base for the Warriors’ baseball team, said he was trying hard to get a personal best.

“I’ve been focusing more on explosiveness,” he said. “I’ve also gotten a lot stronger from last year, and also a lot more flexible. I’ve got everything clanking like it needs to be.”

St. Paul’s, led by Hunter Hall’s win in the discus (161-0), finished second in the boys’ division with 15 points, while McGill-Toolen was third with 11. On the girls’ side, Saraland, led by Alex Pankey’s win in the javelin (106-7), was second with 18 points while UMS-Wright was third with 10.5 points.
