Emu stops traffic on Alabama highway

Follow that bird!

An emu snarled traffic early this morning in St. Clair County, with at least one motorist shooting video of the flightless fowl.

Amanda Howard said she was traveling down Alabama 174 about 7:50 a.m. from Odenville to Pell City when traffic slowed.

“At one point a school bus was behind him,” she said.

Then the cars passing revealed the indomitable emu.

Photos shared on social media showed rows of cars backed up behind the emu, as motorists on their way to work and school had the unexpected encounter.

Emus, native to Australia, can actually run at speeds of up to 30 m.p.h., but this one didn’t seem to be in that much of a hurry.
