What makes top-ranked recruit Jordan Ross special?

The new No. 1-ranked rising senior recruit in the state of Alabama according to 247 Sports is a “total athletic freak of nature.”

That is how Vestavia Hills coach Robert Evans describes 6-foot-5, 215-pound EDGE Jordan Ross.

“If he stays healthy, he should make a lot of money one day,” Evans said. “He’s an NFL talent and hasn’t even scratched the surface of what he is going to be one day.”

The updated 247 sports rankings for the Class of 2024 released earlier this week now have Ross as the top senior recruit in the state followed by Alabama commits Perry Thompson of Foley and Jaylen Mbakwe of Clay-Chalkville. Central-Phenix City wide receiver wide receiver Cameron Coleman and Georgia LB commit Demarcus Riddick round out the top five. Ross and Coleman are still uncommitted.

“Jordan is the top-ranked recruit in the history of Vestavia Hills High School,” Evans said. “We’ve never had a guy that has been as nationally prominent as Jordan, especially in the age of social media. He’s handled it all well. He’s looking for a good relationship and connection with college coaches, and he has that with several schools. Hopefully, he can make a decision this summer and enjoy his senior year.”

The 5-star Ross is the second-ranked EDGE prospect in the nation in the Class of 2024 behind only Arizona’s Elijah Rushing. He is the nation’s 12th-ranked overall prospect, according to 247 sports.

“Jordan is a legit 6-5, 215 or 220 who runs a 4.5, and those guys are nearly impossible to find,” Evans said. “That is why guys like him make a lot of money. There is a premium on every level on rushing the quarterback and, when he’s healthy, there aren’t many like him.”

Ross had 49 tackles for Vestavia in 2022 with 16 tackles-for-loss and 2.5 sacks. He also added several forced fumbles and two defensive touchdowns.

He has visits set for Georgia on March 25, LSU on April 1, Auburn on April 8 and Tennessee on April 15.

“I was at Hoover for eight years,” Evans said. “Jordan reminds me of Jeremiah Moon in stature. There are some similarities to guys like Christian Bell and Darrell Williams. He is kind of in that mood but really more athletic and explosive than any of those guys.

“In 3-4 years, he could be a 6-5, 250-pound EDGE who is still running the same speed, and those guys do really well. I’m not trying to put any added pressure on him, but he would blow the NFL Combine away if he went there right now just as far as his measurables are concerned.”

On3 has Ross ranked No. 3 in the state and No. 37 nationally. Rivals currently ranks Ross No. 8 in the state.

“He has a long way to go, but as far as raw talent there aren’t many like him,” Evans said. “All sophomores and juniors have room to improve their technique. He has to develop physically. We would like to see him at 225 or 230 in August.

“We’ve seen enough already to know that he totally translates at the next level as a pass rusher. Can he be a three-down player? That remains to be seen, but I like the natural progression I’ve seen. He will turn into an absolute physical specimen.”

Vestavia will start spring practice April 27 and conclude with a spring game at McAdory on May 11. Evans said Ross would likely play about a quarter in that game.

“I think the fact that he is still raw in many ways is what appeals to a lot of these coaches,” Evans said. “He is still untapped. A lot of time the knock on over-the-mountain kids is that they are already a finished product. Jordan is the furthest thing from that. He has so much growth and development to do, and that is a great quality to have.”
