Alabama assistant Bryan Hodgson hired by Arkansas State, report says

Alabama men’s basketball assistant coach Bryan Hodgson is being hired as Arkansas State’s head coach, Stadium’s Jeff Goodman reported Wednesday.

Arkansas State’s athletics director is Jeff Purinton, who the school hired last May after he spent seven years in Alabama’s athletic department. Purinton oversaw the Tide’s men’s basketball program for Nate Oats’ first three seasons.

The Red Wolves fired coach Mike Balado earlier this month, after his teams went 82-100 in six seasons. Arkansas State finished 13-20 this season and 4-14 in the Sun Belt, second-worst in the conference.

Hodgson, 35, served the past eight seasons as an assistant for Oats — four at Buffalo (2015-19) and the past four at Alabama. He played a large role in Alabama’s recruiting efforts and worked closely with the team’s front-court players.

It is the first head-coaching job for Hodgson, who served as an assistant at Jamestown Community College in New York and Midland College in Texas before joining Oats’ staff at Buffalo.

Hodgson joins Charlie Henry among Oats’ assistants set to leave for head-coaching jobs this offseason. Henry, who ran Alabama’s defense, was announced earlier this month as Georgia Southern’s head coach after four seasons on Oats’ bench. Antoine Pettway, who runs the offense, is Oats’ remaining assistant coach.
