Alabama’s Brandon Miller named national freshman of the year by USBWA

Alabama star forward Brandon Miller was named Tuesday as the 2022-23 winner of the United States Basketball Writers Association national freshman of the year award.

He is the first Alabama player to win the honor, which was first voted upon in 1989. Miller will formally receive the award at the USBWA awards banquet in St. Louis on April 12, hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club.

The award is named after Wayman Tisdale, the former Oklahoma star in the early 1980s who died of cancer in 2009. Tisdale was the first freshman to receive first-team All-America honors from the USBWA as a freshman.

Miller was named a second-team All-American by the USBWA last week.
