Former Auburn defensive back re-signs with Packers

The Green Bay Packers have re-signed safety Rudy Ford, the NFL team announced on Monday.

In his first season with Green Bay, Ford played in every game with a career-high six starts. Signed to bolster the Packers’ special teams after being released by the Jacksonville Jaguars at the end of the preseason, Ford played a career-high 442 defensive snaps and intercepted three passes in 2022 after having one interception in his first five NFL seasons.

In 2023, Ford might be called on to shoulder some of the load in the secondary again. Safety Adrian Amos played the most defensive snaps for Green Bay in 2022, but he remains an unsigned free agent. Darnell Savage, the No. 2 safety, is considered a candidate at slot corner in 2023.

Ford grew up in the Big Cove community and was an All-State running back at New Hope High School in 2012, when he scored 27 touchdowns for the Indians.

Ford made the transition from running back to defensive back in his first season at Auburn. Although he still ran for 79 yards and one touchdown on eight carries during his time with the Tigers, Ford became a three-year starter in Auburn’s secondary.

Ford split his first four NFL seasons between the Arizona Cardinals and Philadelphia Eagles after entering the league as a sixth-round draft choice in 2017. Before the 2021 campaign, he had been primarily a special-teamer, with 806 special-teams plays and 125 defensive snaps in 41 regular-season games.

After Jacksonville signed Ford in free agency to a two-year, $4.2 million contract, he had 423 defensive snaps and 179 special-teams plays and recorded his first NFL interception in the 2021 season. Improvements in the Jaguars’ defensive backfield made it less likely that Ford would have as prominent a role there in 2022 after he made 53 tackles working at safety and slot corner.

Jacksonville released Ford on Aug. 29, and he signed a one-year contract with the Packers two days later.

Reports peg Ford’s new deal as a one-year, $2.5 million contract after he played the 2022 season for $1,137,500.
