North Alabama spring roundup: Mars Hill softball rallies for big win

Mars Hill Bible School’s softball squad pushed across 12 runs in the bottom of the third inning to break open a scoreless game to beat Lawrence County 14-5 on Saturday in a game at Florence. Both teams managed 10 hits, but Lawrence County committed four errors to two for Mars Hill in the five-inning game.

Catcher Emma Kate Wright went 2-for-3, including a home run, with two runs scored for the winners, ranked No. 7 in Class 3A. Emma Walker was 1-for-1 with a run scored and two RBIs. Molly Wright and Walker had doubles for the Panthers.

Olivia Stegall gave up five runs – two earned – on 10 hits with one strikeout to get the win.

McKenzie Hyche was 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead Lawrence County. Addison Plaxco went 2-for-3. The Red Devils left six runners on base.

Bella Cross took the loss in relief of Emily Byars. Both pitchers allowed seven runs, with six of Byars’ being earned to none for Cross. Byars allowed seven hits in two innings while Cross gave up three over two innings.

SOFTBALL

Lawrence County 3, Hamilton 2: The Red Devils scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth – and final – innings to slip past Hamilton in an event at Florence on Saturday. Lawrence County out-hit the Aggies 6-5 while Hamilton left four runners on base and the Devils stranded five.

Ava Templeton and Bella Cross were both 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI each in the win.

Adagrace Calhoun earned the win, giving up two earned runs on four hits with one walk over 5.1 innings. Kaytie LouAllen, who allowed one hit, got the final two outs.

Michaela Otts took the loss for Hamilton, giving up three runs – two earned – on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

Brilyn Gilstrap had a double and an RBI for the Aggies.

Also on Saturday in Florence, Lawrence County blanked Lexington 11-0 in four innings. McKenzie Hyche homered and had two RBIs. She went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a sacrifice for the Red Devils.

Cross and Alexis LouAllen doubled for Lawrence County. Kaytie LouAllen gave up two hits, walked one and struck out one in the win.

Payton Cleveland was saddled with the loss, allowing 11 runs – three earned – on 11 hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

Briley Allen and Kenslee Davis got hits for Lexington.

West Limestone 8, Waterloo 1: The Wildcats improved to 11-2-1 on the season with the win in tournament play at Florence. West Limestone also topped Colbert County 12-4 and tied Lexington (Tenn.) 2-2.

Lilly Bethune led West Limestone at the plate with a pair of home runs, a triple and four doubles as she batted .447 and drove in 23 runs. Bella Birdsong batted .406 with six RBIs with a homer and a a double. JuliAnn Kyle had four doubles on the way to a .378 average in the event. Addie Wallace had two home runs, two triples, three doubles and 13 RBIs.

JulieAnn Kyle pushed her record in the circle to 7-1. She struck out 11 and carries a 2.08 earned run average. KatliLyn Kyle struck out 13 and has a 4-1 record. She carries a 2.79 ERA.

Reasner sparks Sparkman in Hoover event: Cassie Reasner, a University of Kentucky commitment, hit four home runs in the Buccaneer Round Robin at Hoover. Sparkman’s Reasner is hitting .551 on the year with six home runs, 10 doubles and 27 RBIs. The senior also has 16 stolen bases for Class 7A No. 10 Sparkman (15-7).

Ella Boyd has a 0.920 earned run average as she has built a 6-2 season record. Boyd has 53 strikeouts and has allowed six earned runs.

The Senators will host Area 7 rival Huntsville on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

BOYS

BASEBALL

Madison County 5, West Limestone 4: Chris Fearnside led off the top of the eighth inning with a double and scored on a Brody Moon single with two outs to lift Madison County to the road win over Class 4A No. 5 West Limestone on Saturday.

The home team scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 4 before Madison County’s extra-inning heroics.

Starting pitcher/first baseman Nolan Daversa doubled, as did third baseman Fearnside for Madison County (10-8). Daversa pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three runs – all earned – on six hits. He struck out five and walked two. Jake Thornton picked up the win in 1.1 innings of relief work, allowing one run with no walks or strikeouts.

Memphis Scott was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for the winners. Brody Moon went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Ryan Caudle was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Landon Navas was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs – four earned – on nine hits with seven strikeouts over eight innings on the mound.

Dawson Downs and Ian Burroughs tripled for the Wildcats (15-4). Burroughs was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Downs, Colin Patterson and Cooper Phillips had two hits apiece.

James Clemens 7, Etowah 2: The Jets opened a Saturday double-header with the win before falling 1-0 to Father Ryan of Nashville in the nightcap.

Etowah broke on top with a run in the second, but James Clemens answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and another in the third. The Blue Devils cut the Jets’ margin to 3-2 in the fourth before a four-run sixth gave James Clemens the final margin.

Satchel Wheeler was 1-for-2 with a double and a pair of runs scored and an RBI for the winners. Nathan Guyse was also 1-for-2 with a double.

Grant Gage earned the win for James Clemens, allowing two runs on three hits over four innings.

Jameson Scissum took the loss for Etowah, allowing two runs on one hit with four walks over two innings on the mound. Conner Dingler went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Etowah left nine runners on base while James Clemens left three.

Father Ryan picked up the only run it would need in the second inning and relied on Aidan Carr’s pitching to earn the win. Carr allowed five hits, struck out five and walked two for the Irish. Lawson Ryan gave up one hit in one inning’s work of relief with one walk.

Carter Lynch doubled in three at-bats for Father Ryan.

Cade McComb took the loss for James Clemens, allowing one earned run over six innings with five strikeouts.

Guyse and Ty Marsh both went 2-for-3 with a double for the Jets. Francisco Ramirez also went 2-for-3.

On Friday, James Clemens beat Athens 11-1 on the road, breaking open a scoreless tie with four runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth – and final – inning. Athens pushed across a run in the top of the sixth. The Jets out-hit the Eagles 8-6 and Athens had one error.

Benjamin Graves doubled and scored a run, as did Gage. Colten Payton went 2-for-3 with Brody Stinson and Aidan Cook also scoring twice.

Luke Davenport earned the complete-game win, striking out 13 and allowing six hits and one run. Davenport also walked three.

Riley Miller was saddled with the loss, allowing four earned runs over four innings on three hits. Miller struck out eight with three walks. He also doubled in his lone at-bat. Hudson Marks was 2-for-3 for Athens.

West Limestone 14, Phil Campbell 8: No. 5 Class 4A West Limestone whipped 3A No. 1 Phil Campbell on Saturday with Colin Patterson striking out 10 for the Wildcats. Patterson gave up five earned runs in picking up the win.

Patterson also went 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run, a double and seven RBIs. Keegan Laxson was 1-for-1 with a double and three RBIs for the winners. Owen Lauderdale was 1-for-3 with a double. Ian Burroughs went 2-for-4

Madison Academy 8, Faith Academy 6: Jake Stone homered and Jake Poldiak picked up the win on the mound for the Mustangs on Saturday. Spanish Fort beat the Mustangs 7-6 in a walk-off in Madison Academy’s second game of the day.

Class 5A Madison Academy (8-10) went 4-0 in the Gulf Coast Classic, including a 10-inning 6-5 win over Gulf Shores with Jud Collins driving in the game-winner.
