Birmingham spring sports: Vestavia Hills downs Hoover in girls soccer top 10 game

Vestavia Hills girls soccer beat fifth-ranked Hoover 1-0 in its only game last week during Birmingham area spring sports action.

Lola McMillian scored the game-winning goal on an assist from Anna Towry for the second-ranked Rebels (11-2).

The defense recorded a shutout with Rosemary Gill in goal.

Vestavia Hills has won four straight since a 3-2 loss to sixth-ranked Sparkman on Feb. 28 after the Rebels beat the Senators 1-0 earlier in the season. The other loss came in the season-opener to Chelsea, falling 1-0.

The Rebels also have wins over Class 7A top-ranked Oak Mountain 1-0, third-ranked Spain Park 6-2, ninth-ranked Auburn 2-1 and Class 4A second-ranked St. Michael 5-0.

Vestavia Hills hosts fourth-ranked Hewitt-Trussville on Tuesday and plays at Tuscaloosa County on Thursday.

Calera (4-6-2) beat Stanhope Elmore 8-0 and tied McAdory 5-all last week.

Fourth-ranked Briarwood (9-2-1) beat Helena 6-0 and Pelham 9-0.

Seniors Abigail Hoaglund and Jolee Giadrosich along with sophomore Taylor Leib each scored 2 goals against Helena.

Leib and senior Piper Eighmy each scored 4 goals against Pelham while sophomore Brooklyn Barnett scored a goal.

Sixth-ranked Indian Springs (7-1, 2-0 area) beat Altamont 3-1 last week.

Norah Roller has 10 goals and 3 assists this season while Beth Scarborough has 7 goals and an assist.

BOYS SOCCER

CLASS 7A

Top-ranked Oak Mountain (12-2-1) beat Hewitt Trussville 2-1 and Hoover 1-0 last week.

Caleb Smith scored the lone goal against Hoover on an assist from Luke Jovanovich .

Julian Harrison scored a goal against Hewitt-Trussville while Gabe Capocci scored on an assist from Harrison Kilgore.

Fifth-ranked Chelsea (10-3-1) beat Gardendale 1-0 and Spain Park 7-1.

Max Wever scored a goal and Andrew Teixeira had an assist against Gardendale.

Wever and Kaleb Bass each scored 2 goals against Spain Park while Luke Miller, Teixeira and Parker Dean each scored a goal. Bass had 3 assists, Shon McKinney had 2, and Wever added an assist.

Vestavia Hills (8-6-2) won 3 games last week, beating Thompson 3-2 along with Georgia teams LaGrange 2-1 and Westminster 3-2, winning penalty kicks 3-1.

Parker Dennie scored 2 goals against Thompson, Alec Paraiso scored against LaGrange while Dennie and Paraiso each scored a goal against Westminster and goalkeeper Wyatt Long had three blocked penalty kicks.

CLASS 6A

Third-ranked Briarwood (11-1-2) beat Helena 3-2 and Pelham 1-0 last week.

Carson Tucker had 2 goals while Reece Frost had a goal and assist, Cam Harrington had a goal, Matthias Leib had 2 assists and Sawyer Felton had an assist.

BASEBALL

CLASS 7A

Fourth-ranked Hewitt Trussville (13-4) was 2-1 last week with wins over Cullman 1-0 and Southside-Gadsden 7-3 and a loss Oxford 4-2.

Colby Durden pitched complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts against Cullman.

Sixth-ranked Vestavia Hills (12-4) was 2-2 last week, beating Spain Park 5-0 and Calera 8-1 and losing to Spain Park 6-4 and Chelsea 8-7.

Christopher Johnston batted .428 with 5 runs and 5 RBIs for the week while Jackson Harris hit .363 with 2 walks, 3 RBIs, a runs and was hit 4 times. Hudson Walburn batted .444 with a walk and2 RBIs and Grant Downey batted .500 with 2 walks, an RBI and 2 runs.

Aiden Black struck out 5 and allowed a hit in 4 2/3 innings while Jable Ramey gave up no earned runs and struck out 11 in 6 innings.

Seventh-ranked Spain Park (14-4) was 2-1 with wins over Vestavia Hills 6-4 and Oxford 7-6 and a loss to Vestavia Hills 5-0.

Matthew Widra was 4-for-8 with a double and 3 RBIs for the week while James Battersby was 3-for-7 with 2 RBIs and Evan Smallwood was 3-for-8 with a double and 2 runs.

Jacob Tobias pitched 5 2/3 innings with 5 strikeouts and allowing 4 earned runs while CJ Gross pitched 5 innings with 6 strikeouts and 2 earned runs, JohnRobert Thompson hurled 4 1/3 innings with 5 strikeouts and 2 earned runs and Lucas Thornton struck out 2 in an inning.

No. 10 Hoover (11-6) won 3 games, beating Chelsea 6-0, Pell City 7-4 and Helena 4-3.

Will Adams struck out 12 in 5 innings against Chelsea while Wes Carter struck out 5 in 6 innings against Pell City.

At the plate, RJ Hamilton batted .667 in 6 at-bats, Clayton Wallace hit .500 in 4 at-bats, Mason Blasche batted .500 in 8 at-bats, Colin Rengering hit .429 in 7 at-bats, Camdyn Teague batted .400 in 5 at-bats and Carter Jackman hit .333 in 3 at-bats.

Eighth-ranked Mountain Brook (10-7) won all 3 games in the Battle at the Beach in Biloxi, Miss., beating St. Martin (Miss.) 14-2, Briarcrest Christian (Tenn.) 7-1 and Alma Bryant 9-5.

Ninth-ranked Hueytown (11-6) beat Oak Grove 11-1, Mortimer Jordan 7-5 and Jackson-Olin 17-0.

Aaron Wallace was 4-for-8 with 5 walks while earning a win on the mound, striking out 4 in 6 innings.

Carson Barry was 5-for-10 with 2 walks and Daniel Watkins struck out 7 in 7 innings, allowing a run for the week.

Sophomore Ethan Bucher had 9 hits, 10 runs, 6 RBIs, with only 1 strikeout, adding 5 walks and 14 steals for the week.

Senior pitcher Kareem Keye pitched a pair of 2-hit wins against Fultondale and Oakman, striking out 17 in 10 innings, allowing 3 earned runs with 9 walks.

Parker (13-3, 3-0 area) won 4 games last week, beating Woodlawn 16-0, 21-0 and 19-1 and Fairfield 13-0.

Senior pitcher Donellrious Scott got the 16-0 win with 13 strikeouts while senior catcher DeMarius Lawson was 2-for-2 with 2 doubles and 5 RBIs.

Senior Tyson Allen pitched the 21-0 win with a 13-strikeout no-hitter and was 4-for-4 at the plate with 4 runs.

Senior shortstop Jeremiah Struggs was 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs, a double, triple and 3 runs, junior second baseman DeCorian Welch was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, a home run and 4 runs and junior outfielder Kharon Thomas was 2-for-2 with a double and 3 RBIs.

Sophomore Christian Dooley pitched the 19-1 one-hit win with 12 strikeouts.

Thomas as 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs, 2 doubles and 3 runs and Scott was 3-for-4 with 4 runs, 3 RBIs and 4 steals.

Against Fairfield, senior third baseman Cedric Massengale was 2-2 with 4 RBI’s, a double with 4 steals while Scott pitched a no hitter with 12 strikeouts along with a 2-for-2 game at the plate with 3 RBIs, a double and 3 steals.

Pinson Valley lost to Pell City 2-1 and Gardendale 2-0.

CLASS 5A

Eighth-ranked John Carroll (9-6) won 4 games, beating Clay-Chalkville 11-5, Ramsay 12-0, Shades Valley 14-3 and Holtville 5-4.

Max Plaia was 2-for-3 with a double and 4 RBIs against Clay-Chalkville while Gabe Wilbur was 2-for-2 and struck out 8 in 4 innings pitched.

Noah Smith had a home run and 3 RBIs against Ramsay while Braxton Williams pitched a 5-inning no-hitter with 7 strikeouts.

Mitchell Nutter was 3-for-4, with a triple and RBI against Shades Valley while Hayden Greer was 1-for-2, with a triple and 2 RBIs, striking out 8 and allowing 2 earned runs in 4 innings.

Smith was 3-for-4 with a double against Holtville while Wilbur was 3-for-3 and Aden Malpass was 2-for-3, with 2 RBIs.

Brandon Whatley hit .400 with 4 hits, 3 runs and 6 RBIs for the week while Sam Thompson hit .385 with 5 hits, 4 runs and 3 RBIs.

Kaleb Freeman struck out 5 and allowed 4 runs in 8 innings while Sam Thompson struck out 6 in 3 innings.

Corner (6-8) was 1-3 with a win over Etowah 13-3 and losses to Bob jones 9-5, Hazel Green 9-3 and Father Ryan (Tenn.) 12-0.

Montevallo (2-9) beat Chilton County 7-3 and lost to Bibb County 9-4.

Kemp Swords was 3-for-4 with an RBI against Bibb County while Grayson Duckworth was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Swords was 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and 4 runs against Chilton County, Zach Shores was 2-for-3 with a run and Charlie Adams was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

SOFTBALL

CLASS 7A

Fifth-ranked Hoover (16-3) won 6 games last week, beating Vestavia Hills 7-1, Helena 10-8, Smiths Station 8-2, Cullman 9-6, Jasper 14-0 and Pleasant Valley 10-2.

Emily Sims pitched a perfect game against Jasper on Saturday in the Bucs round-robin tournament while Ki Davis hit .619 for the week and .667 in the tournament.

Kaitlyn Raines batted .571 with 2 doubles and 2 home runs and was 3-0 on the mound this week, throwing 17 2/3 innings with 20 strikeouts.

Bella Foran hit .455 with 2 home runs and 10 RBIs and Olivia Christian hit .545 with 2 home runs.

Seventh-ranked Vestavia Hills (23-4) was 4-1 last week with wins over Thompson, Jasper, Mortimer Jordan and Sparkman and a loss to Hoover.

Hayden Traywick was 9-for-14 with a double, home run, and 7 RBIs for the week while Hannah Steele was 8-for-16 with 3 RBIs, 5 runs, and 8 steals and Presley Lively was 8-for-16 with a home run 4 RBIs, 8 runs and 8 steals.

Hueytown (9-9-1) was 3-3 last week with wins over Pinson Valley 3-2 and 12-6 and Paul Bryant 16-0 and losses to Corner 2-1 and 3-0 and Mountain Brook 6-2.

Kelsey Johnson, Bryanna Kemp and Kylie Kennedy each had 2 hits in the 3-2 win over Pinson while Johnson was 2-for-2, Kemp, McCarrell and Madison Moore each had a hit in the 12-6 victory. McCarrell pitched 2 innings with 3 strikeouts, 2 walks and allowing 3 hits with no earned runs.
