South Alabama Spring Roundup: Saraland edges Mobile Christian
Brooks Womble’s solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted Saraland to a 1-0 win over Class 5A No. 1 Mobile Christian on Friday.
Womble connected on a 1-1 pitch off of Grant Belote, sending it over centerfield for the game’s only run. It was Womble’s first of the season. The Spartans’ shortstop leads the team in hits and runs scored.

Belote came in the game in relief of Leopards starter Zach McKinion.
“Our guys have been throwing the ball well lately. Sometimes the other team just puts a good swing on the ball,” Leopards coach Jason Smith said.
McKinion and Saraland starter Bryson Goff battled in a pitchers’ duel.
McKinion went five innings, allowing a pair of singles and striking out nine Spartans. Goff was victorious on the mound for Saraland, going the distance and giving up two doubles to Noah Blackburn, and striking out a season-high 13.
He leads the Spartans staff with 39 strikeouts on the season.
“Bryson was dealing for Saraland,” Smith said. “His fastball was electric, and his curveball was moving.”
Blackburn doubled in the second and fifth for the Leopard’s lone two hits and was stranded each time. Goff retired the final eight batters after the fifth-inning double.
“For Bryson the key thing was him to cut down on his walks,” Boutwell said. “He had a lot of success tonight attacking the zone and getting ahead of the hitters.”
The Spartans improved to 11-5 with their fifth straight win.
