All that’s happened in the world since Tennessee last beat Alabama, 16 long years ago
Alabama has beaten, and mostly dominated, Tennessee in 15 straight games. That’s 16 long years for the Volunteer fan base, who haven’t lit up a victory cigar since 2006.
Doesn’t that feel like forever ago? Even for Alabama fans, you’re talking pre-Nick Saban, before this golden era that the Crimson Tide and all of their rival fan bases have witnessed for the better part of two decades.
A lot has happened since Tennessee last beat Alabama. Really, like, a lot. Close your eyes real tight, put on your thinking cap, and remember where you were in 2006, and what the world looked like.

Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack” was the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Christopher Nolan’s mind-bending masterpiece “The Prestige” topped the box office, while Martin Scorsese’s beloved crime thriller “The Departed” won the Oscar for best picture.
George W. Bush was serving his second term as president.
And Alabama Democrats still controlled the state legislature.
While Saban has remained Alabama’s head coach since he was hired in 2007, the year that started the current winning streak, Tennessee has had six total coaches: Phillip Fulmer, Lane Kiffin, Derek Dooley, Butch Jones, Jeremy Pruitt, Josh Heupel.
So the Vol fan base has seen a lot over the last 15 years, through ups and downs as time marches on, and the course of American history changes with advances in technology, economic ebbs and flows, historic elections and unforgettable pop culture moments. If a Tennessee fan decided to live under a rock after the first time Saban beat them, here’s all that has happened since the last time they enjoyed the Third Saturday in October. (Note: This does not cover everything. That would be impossible, and silly.)
iPhone invented
Alabama fans like to focus on what Tennessee fans couldn’t do during the streak, specifically in utilizing technologies that were not available to them the last time they won in the series. So it’s true, Vol fans could not check their iPhones during the Alabama game in 2006, because then-Apple CEO Steve Jobs would announce the first-generation iPhone in January 2007.
Google Chrome launches
Google’s popular web browser first released in 2008, though it didn’t become as mainstream until recently. Were Tennessee fans still using Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator 16 years ago?
Great Recession
Vulnerabilities in the financial system signaled global economic decline, beginning with the bursting of the U.S. housing bubble in 2008. The unemployment rate peaked at 10 percent and real GDP fell $650 billion as the government rolled out banking bailouts and stimulus measures that caused political waves.
Barack Obama elected president
America’s first Black president was elected in 2008, defeating Republican candidate Sen. John McCain. He would go on to defeat Gov. Mitt Romney to win re-election in 2012 and serve two terms.
Tesla Roadster launches
Released in 2008 under CEO Elon Musk, this marked the first mass produced lithium-ion battery electric car, the first all-electric car to travel more than 200 miles per charge, and ultimately, the first produced car to be launched into deep space, carried by a Falcon Heavy rocket in a test flight on February 6, 2018.
Kanye interrupts Taylor Swift
At the 2009, VMAs, polarizing rapper and producer Kanye West jumped on stage after Taylor Swift won an award to remind folks that Beyoncé had made one of the greatest music videos of all time. Really, you should YouTube it. (YouTube is an online video sharing and social media platform that…wait, nevermind, this launched in 2005, you should know what it is).
‘Avatar’ breaks records
James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi adventure about the giant blue people utopia became the biggest movie in box office history, breaking his own record with “Titanic” in 1997, thanks to the re-emergence of 3D technologies that raised ticket prices and fan interest in new theatrical experiences. It made nearly $3 billion worldwide and won three Oscars, and a sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” is on the way in 2022.
Bitcoin is here
We won’t begin to try and explain cryptocurrency, but this decentralized digital currency that can be transferred on the peer-to-peer bitcoin network arrived in 2009. The crypto market (and metaverse, oooh) really began to make an impression the last few years as A-list celebrities like LeBron James, Tom Brady, Matt Damon and Larry David appeared in commercials pushing it.
iPad, a bigger iPhone (kind of)
Apple’s tablet computer was actually conceived before the iPhone was developed, but the company officially introduced it in 2010, as parents and grandparents began playing word games and filming dance recitals from the row in front of you.
Instagram launched
The photo and video social networking service first launched in 2010 and remains one of the most popular apps in the world. So, to put it bluntly, no Tennessee fan has ever posted anything about a win over Alabama on Instagram, ever.
Snapchat launched
The next year, Instagram’s biggest competitor Snapchat would launch. A multimedia instant messaging app allowed users to share picture and messages that were only available for a short period before they disappeared. Not to sound repetitive, but no Tennessee fan has ever shared a disappearing message about a win over Alabama using Snapchat, ever.
Osama bin Laden killed
On May 2, 2011, U.S. Navy SEALs killed the leader of al-Qaeda and the terrorist responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks at a compound in Pakistan. The raid was approved by President Obama and involved two-dozen Navy SEALs in two Black Hawk helicopters. The events were depicted in the film “Zero Dark Thirty” the very next year.
Iraq War ends
The withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq began in 2007 and completed at the end of 2011, after the initial invasion in 2003.
Space Shuttle program officially ends
The fourth human spaceflight program carried out by NASA began in 1981, including routine transportation for Earth-to-orbit crew and cargo, and came to an end in 2011. It flew 135 missions and carried 355 astronauts from 16 countries.
A College Football Playoff emerges
They said it would never happen, not in the BCS era during which Tennessee actually won a national title in 1998, but we have an actual postseason tournament to determine a college football champion. Alabama was the inaugural number one seed, but you’ll be pleased to know they were knocked out in the semifinal by eventual champs Ohio State. The Tide have since made the tournament again, a few times actually, while Tennessee has yet to do so. Maybe soon, though!
‘Star Wars’ returns
Sure enough, they brought back the saga everyone loved until George Lucas made those prequels, a trilogy that finished the year before Tennessee last beat Alabama, as Anakin Skywalker fulfilled his destiny of becoming Darth Vader. JJ Abrams directed what would become the most anticipated movie ever made in “The Force Awakens,” followed by a universally beloved sequel “The Last Jedi” and then a finale adored by all, “Rise of Skywalker.” And now we have a bunch of “Star Wars” television shows that don’t actually air on TV the way you watched most content back in 2006. It’s a little complicated, but we’ll get to that.
Cubs win the World Series
They did it. The Cubs broke the Curse of the Billy Goat. It took seven games against the Cleveland Indians (now, the Guardians; another change; Google it), but we finally witnessed baseball history.
Golden State Warriors win 73 games, blow 3-1 lead
This little guy who could shoot the lights out at Davidson College but really had no NBA future managed to win four championships and change the way everyone on Earth plays basketball. Stephen Curry and his Golden State Warriors became a modern sports dynasty, even improbably breaking the Chicago Bulls regular season win record. And they built a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals before LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers stormed back to win it all.
Donald Trump elected once, impeached twice
Marty McFly told 1955 Doc Brown Ronald Reagan was the U.S. President when he traveled back in time to warn him of the events of the future, and the scientist exclaimed, “The actor?!” If we hopped in a DeLorean and went back to 2006, when cigar smoke filled Neyland Stadium for the last time in 15 years, we think the fans wearing bright orange would have similar reactions about the former host of “The Apprentice” and frequent guest star of various World Wrestling Entertainment pay-per-views. Sure enough, Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton on a wild 2016 election and was subsequently impeached twice before losing a re-election bid to current President Joe Biden.
Nintendo Switch
This handheld video game console can be used as a tablet or as a docked home console, one of the most popular gaming devices in the world that released in 2017.
TikTok launches
Say it with me: No Tennessee fan has ever posted a TikTok video about a win over Alabama, ever. This short-form video hosting service, which launched worldwide in 2018, is currently peaking in popularity and is a way many young people get their news. So, on that note, no Tennessee fans have ever received news of a win over Alabama using TikTok, ever.
Michael Phelps wins 17 gold medals in three different Olympics
The greatest Olympian ever? The greatest athlete in the world? The American swimmer had success in Athens in 2004, back when Tennessee was still beating Alabama, but he rose to a new level of aquatic superiority at the games in Beijing, London and Rio de Janeiro. He even hosted “Saturday Night Live” in 2008 and spoke to the Alabama football team ahead of the 2022 season.
Three World Cups
We’ve seen three amazing World Cup tournaments since 2006, when Spain won in South Africa in 2010, Germany won in Brazil in 2014 and France won in Russia in 2018. The U.S. didn’t fair too well, failing to even qualify in 2018, but things are looking up for them and the Vols in 2022!
United Kingdom formally withdraws from the European Union
Remember Brexit? In 2020, the UK became the first and only sovereign country to have left the EU.
The entire MCU
Comic book movies were certainly a thing in 2006. Tennessee fans had seen the likes of Tim Burton’s “Batman,” Tobey Maguire as “Spider-Man” and Halle Berry’s “Catwoman.” But the genre and Hollywood changed as soon as Robert Downey Jr. put on the Iron Man suit in 2008, launching a franchise that would span 14 years with 30 films grossing nearly $30 billion worldwide. The whole thing has occurred during the Alabama winning streak. Coincidence? If Tennessee wins this year, what happens to the MCU?
PlayStation 4 & 5 released
More gaming news. PlayStation is more than just Crash Bandicoot and a few Grand Theft Auto games, Tennessee fans. They’ve since upgraded to the 4 and 5 models, respectively, and they ain’t stopping there. I’m afraid there is bad news, though: They discontinued the beloved “NCAA Football” game from EA Sports in 2013, but there is hope it will return as soon as 2023 thanks to the advent of NIL. We’ll, uh, explain that later.
Four presidents
George W. Bush finished his second term when Barack Obama was inaugurated in January 2009, marking the first new presidency of the 15-year streak, then followed by Donald Trump’s single term and Joe Biden’s current administration. A few Alabama teams have met them, but more on that later.
The Jan. 6 insurrection
After Joe Biden won the 2020 election, a mob of Donald Trump’s supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., hoping to keep Trump in power by preventing a joint session of Congress from counting the electoral college votes to formalize Biden’s victory. The incident resulted in five deaths and many arrests. A House select committee is currently investigating the incident.
COVID
Look, we won’t dwell on this. We lived through a deadly pandemic that claimed the lives of too many and changed the world as we know it.
All the streaming services
You know Netflix, sure, but not in the way that we know Netflix now. Even HBO and Amazon, no longer than a premium cable channel or an online marketplace. Well, they’re still those things, but they also have digital distribution of content where you can use their service to watch movies and television online. Not just on your computers either! You can actually use devices that let you do it on your television, or they’re already built into your TV! It sounds weird, but it’s amazing and it’ll make sense as soon as you use it the first time.
Three new Batmen
You knew about and mostly liked Christian Bale as Batman in Christopher Nolan’s first stab at the Dark Knight. Trust us, it gets even better. And then they make more Batman movies, with multiple Batmen. We’ve even seen (and heard) three since Bale, including Ben Affleck in Zack Snyder’s “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League” and Robert Pattinson (the guy who played Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” because “Twilight” hadn’t even come out yet). But also Will Arnett as “LEGO Batman.” Yeah, they make LEGO movies now. People love them, and the Batman one is kinda good.
Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars
It’s true. We wouldn’t believe it if you told us either, but it happened on national television. And yes, Smith rose to quite the caliber of film actor, as you knew when you saw his Oscar-nominated turn in “The Pursuit of Happyness” in 2006. But Smith delivered a career-defining role as Richard Williams (Venus and Serena’s father) in “King Richard,” for which he won the best actor Oscar, after what many consider a career-defining moment when he took offense to a joke Rock made about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. He walked on stage, smacked Rock in the face, walked back and they still gave him the trophy afterward. We’re still processing it, guys.
Alabama wins. A lot.
Oh, and Alabama has won six national championships and eight SEC championships. Tennessee has only appeared in one title game, in 2007 when they lost to LSU.
