Suspect charged in 2022 hit-and-run that killed Birmingham bicyclist

A suspect has been charged in a 2022 deadly hit-and-run that killed a 49-year-old bicyclist in Birmingham.

James Louise Green Jr., 35, is charged with reckless manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident, according to court records made public Thursday. He is charged in the Oct. 9, 2022, death of 49-year-old Taurus Lamond Hearns Sr., a father and grandfather.

The crash happened at 7:21 p.m. that Sunday on First Avenue South at 18th Street near Railroad Park.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, Hearns was riding a bicycle when he was struck. The driver – now identified as Green – left the scene.

Hearns was taken to UAB Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 7:45 p.m.

It wasn’t immediately clear how police identified Green as the suspect.

Green was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Monday and released the same day after posting $45,000 bond.
