Professional wrestler Kofi Kingston didn’t let an injured ankle keep him from sampling Birmingham ahead of a Friday surgery, and he recounted on social media how he was “very grateful for the people I’ve come across here in Birmingham today.”

Kingston, the Ghana-born WWE wrestler, injured his ankle on the March 3 episode of SmackDown, according to Figure Four Online. On Twitter, he announced he will have surgery today at the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Center.

In a long tweet, Kingston summed up his Thursday excursions around the Magic City by stating “Alabama folks are so kind.”

Kingston, determined to workout at the YMCA Shades Valley despite his air cast walking boot, took an electric street scooter. But the scooter ran out, so he called an Uber driver, who eventually took him to Target.

He eventually got to the Birmingham YMCA, anxious to workout before his surgery. Upon arrival, he was told at the desk that he needed a guest to receive a pass. “But you can be my guest,” the woman behind the desk told him.

“So kind of her to do for a stranger,” he said.

He then made his way to Nepali cuisine stop Yummefy, at 707 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. S., which his map app told him was closed.

“Tons of vegan options,” he wrote. “When I got my food, I went to inform the lady that the maps app said they were closed and they should probably fix their hours. She said, ‘oh we are closed. We just made that food for you anyway.’ My jaw dropped in disbelief. It was 15 minutes past the closing time! I thanked her profusely. So kind of her to go out of her way so that I could eat.”

Kingston, looking forward to his surgery, had only good things to say about his time in the city.

“Anyway, a long message that can be summed up by saying that I am very grateful for the people I’ve come across here in Birmingham today,” he wrote.
