If you were unaware that when Noah Clowney was called for a charge in the first half of Thursday’s NCAA tournament first-round game against Texas A&M-Corpus-Christi it was his third foul, you aren’t the only one.

Alabama coach Nate Oats is among that group of people who didn’t know.

At the 10:08 mark of the game – and the Tide leading 24-17 – Clowney was called for his third foul and headed to the bench with 10 points.

CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson reported during the broadcast that Oats was “extremely frustrated with his assistants. He said, ‘I didn’t know he had two. That’s three? Why didn’t anyone tell me?’”

As pointed out during the broadcast, there are certain things the bench keeps track of, most importantly, foul counts and timeouts.

The third foul didn’t seem to impact the game as the top-seeded Tide led 54-34 at halftime. Mark Sears has a team-high 13 points. Brandon Miller didn’t score in the first half.

“I thought offensively we got the ball moving,” Oats said during the halftime interview. “Mark Sears had a great half. Defensively, we did a better job eliminating their 3s. We just can’t let them get open 3s. That’s how they are going to come back. We took care of the ball pretty well on offense, too.”
