Suspect charged in shooting death of 59-year-old Shelby County man

A suspect has been charged in the fatal shooting of a Shelby County man.

Donald Patrick Johnson, 28, was taken into custody Wednesday. He is charged with murder in the slaying of 59-year-old Robert Etress.

Shelby County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at 8:32 a.m. Wednesday to a 911 call in the 2500 block of Highway 311. When they arrived, they found Etress outside of his residence.

He had been shot multiple times, sheriff’s officials said, and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Later Wednesday, investigators identified Johnson as the suspect in the death of Etress. A motive has not been disclosed, but authorities said the two men were acquaintances.

Johnson is being held without bond in the Shelby County Jail.

“My heart goes out to the victim’s family and those affected by this heinous crime,’’ said Sheriff John Samaniego. “I am proud of the men and women of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office who worked swiftly and diligently to bring this person to justice.”

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with additional information is asked to call detectives at 205-670-6000. Tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
