Dollar store to stop selling eggs because they’re too expensive
The price of eggs has become so high that one large chain is refusing to sell them.
Dollar Tree announced Tuesday that its stores would stop selling eggs because Avian flu is driving the prices up.
The Labor Department released data on Tuesday that showed egg prices fell 6.7% in February. That said, the current price of a dozen eggs is still about double what it was a year ago.
Dollar Tree said it will resume selling eggs in the fall, but until then, eggs sold in the grocery sections of more than 8,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada will be removed, a spokesperson told Reuters.
The decision comes at a time when the Easter and Passover holidays are coming up, two popular holidays for egg sales.
Prices of eggs have soared because of Avian flu, which has devastated egg-laying chickens throughout the U.S. since 2022 and has shown no signs of abating. Last fall, the price of a dozen eggs rose 60%, and as recently as January, the average price of a dozen eggs hovered around $5.
