Aaron Rodgers: ‘My intention is to play for the New York Jets’ in 2023

Aaron Rodgers said Wednesday he plans to play for the New York Jets in 2023, and is waiting for the Green Bay Packers to decide on trade compensation for the veteran All-Pro quarterback.

Rodgers has played for the Packers for his entire 18-year NFL career, but widespread speculation in recent weeks has led many to believe his days in Green Bay are over. During his regular appearance on the Pat McAfee Show Wednesday afternoon, Rodgers confirmed a trade to New York is his desire.

“I made it clear (to the Packers) my intention was to play and to play for the New York Jets, and I haven’t been holding anything up,” Rodgers said, via ESPN’s Rob Demovsky. “It’s the compensation that the Packers are trying to get. … The Packers want to move on and have let me know that in so many words.”

The 39-year-old Rodgers is a four-time NFL Most Valuable Player and is among the league’s all-time leaders in passing yards (59,055, 9th) and touchdown passes (475, 5th). He led Green Bay to a Super Bowl championship after the 2010 season and is paid more than $50 million per year as part of a three-year contract extension he signed last March.

However, his relationship with the Packers has soured in recent years, particularly since Green Bay drafted Utah State quarterback Jordan Love in the first round in 2020. Rodgers was reportedly close to being traded to the Denver Broncos last offseason before agreeing to his latest new contract, which contains an opt-out clause at the end of next season.

Rodgers has toyed with the idea of retiring several times, and auditioned to be host of the game show Jeopardy! in 2021. Last month, he went on a “darkness retreat” in Oregon, emerging after three days in solitude with the apparent intention to continue playing, just not for the Packers.

“I f—ing love that city,” Rodgers said of Green Bay. “I love that organization and always going to have love for that organization. The facts are right now they want to move on and now so do I.

“I don’t think there’s a scenario where they’re like, ‘Well, we want this and the Jets aren’t willing to give it to us, so we’ll take you back.’ That’s not the reality.”

Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy gave an interview with a Green Bay television station last week, and spoke of Rodgers’ tenure with the Packers in the past tense.

“Very few players play for only one team,” Murphy told WBAY. “Obviously Brett (Favre) had a great career. Aaron had a great career here. Regardless of what happens, Aaron will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He’ll be in our Hall of Fame. We’ll bring him back, retire his number. This is just one of the things that we go through as a team. We want to try to achieve something that’s good for both Aaron and us.”

Rodgers met in California last week with Jets officials, who are looking to lure the star quarterback in the same way they did fellow Packers legend Brett Favre in 2008. Favre played just one season in New York — leading the Jets to a 9-7 record — before spending the final two years of his career in Minnesota.

The Jets finished 7-10 in 2022, their seventh consecutive losing season and 12th straight without a playoff appearance. Zach Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, started nine games at quarterback last season, with Joe Flacco and Mike White starting four each.

Rodgers has reportedly supplied the Jets with a “wish list” of players he wants them to acquire, including former Packers wide receivers Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb, plus veteran pass-catchers Odell Beckham and Marcedes Lewis. Lazard — Green Bay’s leading receiver last season — reportedly agreed to a 4-year contract with New York on Tuesday, the first day of the NFL’s free-agency period.

The Jets also recently hired former Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett as offensive coordinator, the same role he held in Green Bay from 2019-21. Whoever runs team’s social media account appears to be in favor of what Rodgers had to say Wednesday:
