An investigation is underway after an elementary school student brought a gun to school Wednesday in his backpack.

The incident happened Wednesday morning at Springville Elementary School.

That gun, school officials said, was an antique and unloaded. There was never any danger to the students or staff, said Springville Police Chief Wayne Walton.

St. Clair County Schools released this statement to AL.com, which was also sent out to parents.

“There was a safety concern that occurred this morning on campus before the start of the school day. We were notified that an elementary student had an antique unloaded handgun in his backpack which was confiscated immediately. Due to the quick response of the staff on duty and Springville Police SRO the matter was immediately secured without disruption to the school day. The school is cooperating with law enforcement for the resolution of this matter. The safety of our students and staff is of utmost importance. As we do each day, we will stay vigilant and alert to all safety concerns.”

Walton said the incident was resolved in about “30 seconds.”

“No kids were ever in danger,’’ he said, “no teachers were ever in any danger.”

Authorities did not say whether the student remained at school Wednesday. The investigation is ongoing.
