Giants work out former Alabama All-Americans

Four games into the 2022 season, the New York Giants already have only one fewer victory than they had in the entire 17-game 2021 campaign. But injuries are threatening to derail the Giants’ promising 3-1 start, so New York is on the lookout for players to help maintain their momentum.

Among the free agents who have come in for workouts with the NFL team are former Alabama All-Americans Landon Collins and AJ McCarron. Collins, a safety, worked out on Monday, and McCarron, a quarterback, worked out on Tuesday.

On Sunday against the Chicago Bears, an ankle injury forced starting QB Daniel Jones to the sidelines. But when Tyrod Taylor had to leave the game, too, after a helmet-to-helmet hit, the Giants’ offense was reduced to running back Saquon Barkley taking wildcat snaps and Jones handing off the football.

New York still beat the Bears 20-12, but the Giants don’t know if Jones or Taylor will be ready to play on Sunday, when they face the Green Bay Packers in London.

The only other quarterback on New York’s roster is Davis Webb, who is a member of the practice squad.

McCarron has a connection with Giants coach Brian Daboll. The former Alabama offensive coordinator was the Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator in 2018, when McCarron spent the offseason and preseason with the team before being traded to the Oakland Raiders. Current New York general manager Joe Schoen was the Bills’ assistant general manager at the time.

McCarron hasn’t played since the 2021 preseason, when he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament, and the knee injury caused him to miss the Atlanta Falcons’ entire season.

Giants strong safety Julian Love also left Sunday’s game with a head injury and joined Taylor in the concussion protocol.

Collins has been out of football since March 10, when the Washington Commanders cut him for salary-cap considerations.

Collins had three seasons remaining on a six-year, $84 million contract. He had base salaries of $11.5 million in 2022, $12.5 million in 2023 and $13.5 million in 2024 remaining.

Collins would have counted $16.082 million against Washington’s salary cap for 2022. By releasing him, the Commanders shaved $6.482 million off their salary-cap commitments. Collins still is counting $9.6 million against Washington’s salary cap this year.

Collins came to Washington in free agency after four seasons with the New York Giants, during which he was a Pro Bowler three times and a first-team All-Pro selection once at safety.

In 2021, Collins had 81 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three sacks, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries while playing 675 defensive snaps in 13 games. He missed four games because of a foot injury. Despite that, Collins was the only player in the NFL with at least three sacks, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries last season.
