Casey White wants change in venue in Vicki White felony murder trial

Lawyers for Casey Cole White in a Monday court filing say national and international news coverage of his escape last April with jailer Vicki White has “severely prejudiced” his case.

The man, whose murder trial begins June 12, is asking for a change of venue from Lauderdale County.

In a four-page motion, White’s lawyers mention news stories by new organizations, tweets by the actor Rainn Wilson, and a Facebook group with more than 50,000 members devoted to news about White and his escape last year with Vicki White, who was not related.

“It would take a resident living in a dwelling without access to electricity or communication from the outside world for the last month to not know a significant amount of information about the Defendant, his capital murder case, and his other legal matters,” the motion states.

Having the trial in Lauderdale County, they argue, would violate his rights to a fair trial under the 6th and 14th Amendments.

White’s felony murder trial deals with the death of Vicki White, the jail officer who authorities said facilitated Casey White’s escape in April 2022 and resulted in an 11-day manhunt before Casey White was captured in Indiana.

Vicki White took her own life with a gunshot to the head as police were closing in, according to authorities. Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly said Casey White was charged with felony murder because Vicki White’s death occurred during the commission of a felony – escaping from jail.

Casey White also faces a capital murder trial set for Aug. 14 for the 2015 slaying of Connie Ridgeway in Rogersville. When he escaped from jail, White was being held for the trial, then just weeks away. That trial was delayed in the aftermath of the escape and White retaining a new team of attorneys.

White is currently serving a 75-year sentence for convictions stemming from an array of 2015 charges, including attempted murder.
