Stories about school teacher shortages, echoed in outlets around the country this fall, can be scary. News outlets have said school staffing is in “crisis” and is “catastrophic.”

Here at AL.com, our Ed Lab team also has reported on high rates of staff retirements and low morale.

But what’s actually changed at the classroom level? Has child learning been impacted? And what can educators and parents learn from communities in other states and cities?

The Alabama Education Lab is assessing the issue with our latest national journalism collaborative project, called “Tackling Teacher Shortages.” This series is part of a national collaboration between Education Labs and journalists at The Associated Press, AL.com, The Christian Science Monitor, The Dallas Morning News in Texas, The Fresno Bee in California, The Hechinger Report, The Seattle Times and The Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina.
