Giant Starbucks planned for Athens, will be among state’s largest

That largest Starbucks in Alabama planned for downtown Huntsville? It will soon have a virtual twin in Athens.

A Starbucks with 2,500 square feet will anchor a three-tenant outparcel development at the Publix at MidTown Centre on U.S. 31 in Athens. Athens-based Ming Commercial Real Estate made the announcement Monday afternoon. The two other tenants have not been announced in what will be a 7,000 square foot space altogether.

The Huntsville Starbucks will still be slightly bigger with plans calling for about 2,800 square feet. Most Starbucks drive-thru locations range from 1,600 to 1,800 square feet. The new Athens Starbucks will use the popular coffee shop’s “new large format footprint,” according to the announcement by Ming.

When the Starbucks at the University of Alabama Student Center (formerly known as Ferguson Center) opened in 2012, it was touted as the nation’s largest. It has long been eclipsed with a Starbucks location in Chicago that opened in 2019 checking in at about 35,000 square feet. A 23,000 square feet location opened at the Empire State Building in New York last year.

The Starbucks planned for downtown Huntsville will be in the $40 million Autograph Collection Hotel that is under construction on Monroe Street outside the Von Braun Center. The hotel is being built in the southwest corner of the reconfigured parking garage overlooking Big Spring Park.

The location will feature outdoor café space on Monroe Street and indoor seating areas.
