North Alabama spring sports: James Clemens goes 3-1 in tourney

The James Clemens baseball team went 3-1 over the weekend in the Terry Sikes Tournament hosted by Charles Henderson High School in Troy.

The Jets beat Stanhope 9-5, Bibb County 3-2 and Shelby County 6-0. Pike Liberal Arts beat James Clemens 3-2 in the event.

Sophomore Ty Marsh was 8-for-12 in the games with a .692 on-base percentage. He had one home run, one triple and a double with seven RBIs.

Senior Colten Payton was 7-for-14 with a .500 OBP and three RBIs.

Senior Andrew Lawrence was 5-for-11 with a double, an RBI and four stolen bases, with a .533 OBP.

Juniors Luke Davenport and Mason Busch earned wins in the event. Davenport struck out 13 in a seven-inning three-hitter. He walked one and allowed no runs. Busch went eight innings, striking out five. He allowed one earned runs on four hits with one walk.

BASEBALL

Madison County 11, DAR 1: Three Tigers combined to no-hit DAR on Saturday in a five-inning road win. Jace Duckett, Andre Towers and Nolan Daversa took the mound with Duckett getting the start and the win. Duckett went four innings, allowing one earned run with three strikeouts and five walks.

Towers walked two Patriots before Daversa came on to strike out one and close the game.

Madison County scored four runs in the second and fifth innings with Memphis Scott going 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs. Towers went 2-for-4 with a double, Ryan Caudle went 1-for-4 with a double and three runs scored and Daversa doubled and scored twice. Nicholas Sharp was 2-for-3 and William Bibb went 1-for-1 with two runs scored.

Starter Landon Broadway took the loss for DAR, allowing seven runs – six earned – on eight hits over four innings. Broadway struck out six and walked three. Broadway also walked and scored the Patriots’ run.

On Tuesday, Madison County whipped Lee-Huntsville 12-1. The Tigers out-hit Lee 9-3 and the Generals had four errors to none for Madison County.

Scott got the win for Madison County, pitching 3.2 innings in relief of starter Jake Thornton. Scott allowed one run on two hits, struck out six and walked two. Thornton struck out two and gave up one hit over 1.2 innings. Brody Moon struck out three over 1.2 innings to close out the win.

Thornton went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the win. Sharp was 1-for-3 with a double with two runs scored. Christopher Fearnside tripled in four at-bats and drove in a run.

Sean Condron was saddled with the loss for Lee, allowing eight runs – three earned – over 1.1 innings. Joseph Hanrion allowed four runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

Reed Hunkapillar was 1-for-3 with a double for Lee. Jamie Tatum was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Devin Ransom was 1-for-3 at the plate.

Madison Academy 13, Sardis 2: Malachi Bailey picked up the win on the mound for the Mustangs, who bounced back from a 2-0 loss in the first game of the double-header on Friday.

Carson Creehan had two hits and a pair of RBIs to lead Madison Academy (3-9) at the plate.

Class 7A Grissom beat 5A Madison Academy 6-1 on Tuesday and 8-6 on Thursday.

West Limestone 8-8, Colbert County 5-3: West Limestone won its seventh straight with the double-header sweep on the road on Saturday. The Wildcats improved to 11-3 on the year.

Keegan Laxson went 3-for-3 to lead West Limestone at the plate in Game 1. Dawson Downs was 2-for-3.

Andrew Abernathy earned the win with Landon Navas picking up a save.

Weston Owens was 3-for-3 with two RBIs for West Limestone in Game 2. Colin Patterson and Cooper Phillips had two hits apiece in the win.

Navas got the win on the mound.

On Friday, West Limestone beat East Limestone 9-1 on the road. Colin Patterson struck out 17 East Limestone batters with no walks and no earned runs.

Navas went 4-for-4, Ian Burroughs was 3-for-4 with a triple and a pair of doubles and Dawson Downs went 2-for-4.

Hazel Green 5, Madison County 3: The Trojans held off a final-inning rally to get the road win on Thursday at Gurley. Hazel Green scored single runs in the first, second, fourth, sixth and seventh and carried a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Starter Anderson Olson got the win on the mound, throwing three shutout innings. He allowed two hits with one strikeout and three walks. Parker Hall went the final two-thirds of an inning for the Trojans.

Jonathan Whitworth went two-for-three with a double and an RBI. Jackson Hunter was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.

Starter Jake Thornton took the loss for Madison County, allowing five runs – three earned – on seven hits over 6.1 innings. Thornton struck out three and walked two.

Andre Towers went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Ryan Caudle doubled for his only hit in four at-bats. Christopher Fearnside was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Sparkman 7, Mosley (Fla.) 6: Evan Nelson went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Senators to the win on Friday over the Panama City team. Jacob Haley was 1-for-2 with a two RBIs. Carter Wells and Wyatt Shears also had an RBI each.

Ethan Clark picked up the win in relief, allowing no hits and one earned run over two innings with three strikeouts. Freshman Brenner VanDeWynkel struck out three over two innings in relief, allowing one earned run on no hits.

Hazel Green 2, Buckhorn 0: The Trojans ran their record to 8-1-1 on the year and 2-0 in Area 16 play with the win at Buckhorn.

Edgar Rodriguez and Tyler Holman scored for Hazel Green. Elijah Cooper had an assist for the Trojans.

Senior keeper had three saves to record the shutout.

Buckhorn fell to 4-5-1 and 2-1 in area play.

SOCCER

Hartselle 3, Oxford 2: The Tigers nipped Oxford in the second game of a pair played on the road on Saturday to improve to 7-2-2 on the season.

Owen Bennich, Luke Vinson and Ethan Medendorp scored goals in the win. Slate Gargus had an assist for Hartselle.

Earlier on Saturday, Hartselle and Pell City battled to a 2-2 draw at Pell City. Bennich scored both Hartselle goals off assists by Eli Moore and Medendorp.

On Monday, the Tigers beat Buckhorn 2-1 in a home match. Bennich and Luke Minnon scored for Hartselle.

SOCCER

Huntsville 1, Grissom 0: The Crimson Panthers earned the narrow victory over rival Grissom on penalty kicks in front of a packed house at Huntsville on Friday.

There was drama in overtime, too, as three goalkeeper saves – one by Grissom and two by Huntsville – had to be retaken after it was ruled that the keepers had moved too early.

Huntsville (4-4-1) outshot Grissom (8-2) 14-10.

Huntsville goalkeeper Cecelia Smith saved a penalty kick two minutes before the end of the second overtime and Grissom missed a penalty kick three minutes before the end of the first half in the marathon game. Smith came up big again saving a re-kick to her left in the shootout that preserved a 4-3 Huntsville lead.

Abby Skonieczny got the final penalty kick to close out the Class 7A Area 7 match.

Both teams are 2-1 in area play.

Hazel Green 5, Buckhorn 0: No. 10 Hazel Green picked up a Class 6A Area 16 win on the road on Tuesday. The Trojans are 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the area.

Eighth-grader Reanna Chapman scored a hat trick in the win and senior Makenna Boyle added two in the win.

Eighth-graders Charlie Cantrell and Chapman had assists along with freshman Hannah Garner.

Junior Anna Amara got the shutout in goal.

Sophomore Catie David had 13 saves for Buckhorn (3-5, 2-1).
