Dolphins zero in on Tua Tagovailoa’s next backup

Another season, another backup for Tua Tagovailoa with the Miami Dolphins, although this time the backup will be the quarterback with less NFL experience.

When NFL free agency opens at 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday, the Dolphins plan to sign Mike White of the New York Jets, NFL Network and ESPN reported on Monday.

White entered the NFL from Western Kentucky as a fifth-round choice of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2018 NFL Draft. But his only NFL regular-season action has come with the Jets in the past two years, when he started seven games.

In 2022, White started four games in relief of Zach Wilson. White completed 103-of-175 passes for 1,192 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions. He likely would have stayed in the lineup, too, but he sustained broken ribs.

Tagovailoa entered the NFL from Alabama as the fifth player picked in the 2020 NFL Draft. He was behind Ryan Fitzpatrick for the first six games of his NFL career before the rookie and the 16-year veteran switched roles.

In 2021, former Indianapolis Colts starter Jacoby Brissett served as Tagovailoa’s backup, and in 2022, it was former Carolina Panthers/Denver Broncos starter Teddy Bridgewater.

Since Tagovailoa became the Dolphins’ starter in a 28-17 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Nov. 1, 2020, he has missed 10 of Miami’s 44 games.

In 2022, Tagovailoa missed four regular-season games and one postseason contest because of concussions. In two of those games, seventh-round rookie Skylar Thompson took most of the snaps at quarterback for the Dolphins because Bridgewater was injured, too.

Bridgewater is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday. Thompson remains under contract with Miami.

Reports indicate White will be coming aboard in 2023 for a two-year deal worth up to $16 million.
