Detroit re-signs former Alabama defensive lineman

Isaiah Buggs found a place to play in the NFL in 2022, and he’s not leaving it in free agency.

The Detroit Lions announced on Monday that Buggs had signed a contract extension rather than become an unrestricted free agent as scheduled on Wednesday. The contract is a two-year deal worth up to $6 million, NFL Network reported.

The former Alabama defensive lineman signed a one-year contract with Detroit shortly before the start of training camp last offseason and had the best season of his NFL career.

Buggs played in every game and started the final 13 at nose tackle. He recorded career highs with 46 tackles and 10 quarterback hits and registered his first NFL sack.

Buggs joined the Pittsburgh Steelers as a sixth-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft after two seasons as a starter at Alabama.

In his first two seasons, Buggs played 206 defensive snaps in 19 games.

In his third season with the Steelers, Buggs started six times as he played 227 defensive snaps in the first 10 games of Pittsburgh’s 2021 campaign. But he did not play after Nov. 21. Buggs missed three games because of an ankle injury, sat out another on reserve/COVID-19 and was an apparent healthy scratch in two more before the Steelers waived him the day before their regular-season finale.

Buggs joined the Las Vegas practice squad the next week before the Raiders’ season ended with a playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
