8 killed in Birmingham-area traffic crashes between Friday and Sunday including several hit-and-runs

Eight people died in Jefferson County traffic crashes between Friday and Sunday, including two pedestrians killed in hit-and-runs and two others who were fatally struck while standing outside their disabled vehicles.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified most of the victims Monday.

The victims included Ryan Alexander Childers, 30, Bryan Gary Wood, 41, Carolyn Marie Palmer, 71, James Lee Brown Jr., 53, Enrique Aguilar Camilo, 25 and William Joseph Miller IV. Two other weekend fatality victims have not yet been identified.

One person was killed in a head-on crash on Interstate 22 in Graysville.

Childers, of Jasper, was killed in a fiery crash early Friday on Interstate 22 near Graysville.

Authorities said Childers was traveling eastbound in a Toyota Corolla in the westbound lanes of I-22 when he collided head on with a westbound tractor-trailer. Both vehicles burst into flames.

Childers was pronounced dead on the scene at 12:40 a.m. Friday.

The truck driver – 44-year-old Louis J. Perejuste of Hollywood, Fla., was taken to UAB Hospital.

Alabama State Troopers are investigating.

Fatal Hit-and-Run

Wood, of Birmingham, was walking on the shoulder of West Boulevard at 87th Street North Friday morning when he was struck by a vehicle that was attempting to pass another vehicle in the curve, said Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates.

The vehicle that struck Wood then crashed into a nearby home. Two people inside the vehicle fled on foot.

Wood was pronounced dead on the scene at 9:20 a.m.

Birmingham police have not announced any arrests.

Sweeney Hollow Road Fatality March 10, 2023

Palmer, of Remlap, was killed just before 12:30 p.m. Friday on Sweeney Hollow Road near Pinson.

Jefferson County sheriff’s Lt. Joni Money said the vehicle left the road and struck multiple trees.

Palmer was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:54 p.m. The driver was taken to UAB Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Traffic Reconstruction Team.

Brown, of Birmingham, died early Saturday in the 100 block of Roebuck Drive.

Authorities said his vehicle became disabled and he was standing outside of his vehicle waiting for a friend to come help him. While he was waiting, he was struck by another vehicle that fled the scene.

Brown was pronounced dead at 5:02 a.m.

Birmingham police are investigating.

Camilo, of Birmingham, was killed early Sunday on Interstate 65 northbound near Green Springs Avenue.

Yates said Camilo’s vehicle became disabled in the northbound lanes of the interstate. He was struck by another vehicle at 1:35 a.m. while standing outside his vehicle.

The driver who struck him stopped and called 911.

Camilo was pronounced dead on the scene at 3:05 a.m.

Birmingham police worked the crash.

McCalla Fatal Crash March 12, 2023

A man was killed Sunday, March 12, 2023, in a single-vehicle crash in the 7400 block of Old Tuscaloosa Highway in McCalla.

Miller, of Lake View, was killed early Sunday in the 7400 block of Old Tuscaloosa Highway in McCalla.

Just before 5 a.m. Sunday, Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the single-vehicle wreck. They arrived to find Miller inside the wreckage.

He was pronounced dead on the scene at 5:10 a.m.

A dog had been ejected from the vehicle and was injured. Animal Control assisted with the care of the dog.

Authorities said it appeared that the vehicle had left the roadway and overturned during a rainstorm.

Pedestrian Killed March 12, 2023

Also Sunday, an unidentified man was killed in a hit-and-run in front of Birmingham-Southern College.

Authorities said the adult Black male was standing on the grass shoulder in the 800 block of Arkadelphia Road when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver who struck the man fled the scene.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:11 a.m.

Birmingham police are investigating.

Homewood Fatality March 12, 2023

Another man whose identity has not been released was found dead in a crashed vehicle Sunday in Shades Creek off Interstate 65 in Homewood.

Homewood police responded to I-65 southbound just south of Lakeshore Parkway near an apartment complex just after 1:30 p.m. A passerby made the discovery and called 911.

The victim, an adult white male, was pronounced dead on the scene at 1:47 p.m.

Sgt. John Carr said it appears the vehicle left I-65 and ended up in the creek. It wasn’t immediately clear when the crash happened, but investigators believe it took place hours before the vehicle and the victim were discovered.
