Leeds-Moody set for battle of unbeaten Class 5A rivals
Leeds and Moody met last season when both football teams were undefeated, with the Green Wave winning at home on the way to a 10-2 finish. The teams entered the game at 3-0 and Moody finished with a 6-4 after the 33-19 loss.
On Friday, the teams meet again with unblemished records. Leeds will make the 11½-mile trip and bring a 7-0 record and No. 2 ranking in the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll to tangle with third-ranked and 8-0 Moody.
Things have changed at Moody as Jake Ganus replaced Adam Wallace as head coach and brought a high-flying offensive attack that has already set a team record for points scored with 392. The Blue Devils are scoring 49 points a game, tops in Class 5A and seventh in the state. It should be quite the test for the Green Wave, which allows only 9 points per outing – third in 5A and 13th in the state.
Leeds has held four opponents to 7 points or fewer, gave up 10 to Pell City and 13 to Springville and St. Clair County. Moody’s lowest offensive output came in a 32-6 win over Lincoln. The Blue Devils have scored 50-plus points three times, 40-plus three times and beat Cleburne County 62-7.
“Our defense has played lights out and we’re confident with them,” Leeds head coach Jerry Hood said. “We kind of know what they will do, we’ve looked at them, we just have to try to defend those great athletes.”
The Blue Devils are led by senior quarterback Cole McCarty, who has thrown for 2,177 yards and 32 touchdowns while completing 75 percent of his passes (108-of-144). Senior Davion Dozier, a three-star recruit, has caught 33 passes for 841 yards and 15 scores. Senior Kolby Seymour has 36 catches for 736 yards and 11 TDs.
Offensive lineman Mason Myers, another senior who has committed to Arkansas State, leads the way for running back Blaine Burke. The junior has 1,066 yards on 102 carries with six touchdowns.
“They are an amazing offense with some great receivers and that running back (Burke) is one of the best players I’ve seen this year. Their quarterback is unbelievable and they can put up points in a variety of ways. It will be a great challenge for our kids, no question about it.”
Hood will be sending some top-notch athletes into the fray, too. Junior Kavion Henderson is a four-star college prospect, according to 247sports. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound defensive lineman has offers from 37 schools, including 11 from the Southeastern Conference.
“Kavion and (6-3, 245-pound junior) Chris Burge are a couple of good defensive linemen we have,” Hood said. “They have really stood out.
“We have liked out offensive and defensive lines. That’s where you start in football.”
Burge caused two fumbles in last week’s 23-7 win at Alexandria and Joseph Stone has also been an anchor on the D-line. Behind them, CJ Douglas (6-1, 193-pound senior) and Zaine Hood (5-11, 175, senior) lead the secondary.
On the offensive side, where Leeds will have to contend with a Moody defense that allows 14.1 points a game, the Green Wave is led by senior quarterback Jarod Latta, sophomores Conner Nelson and Jaelyn Felder. Running backs Miles Jones (5-9, 195-pound sophomore) and Jeremiah Hunter (5-10, 210-pound senior) are also top threats for the Green Wave.
“We try to offer up a variety of formations and just do what we do,” Hood said. “We hope to play consistent, execute well and avoid penalties. We love to control the clock, too. That’s big for us.
“We try to take advantage of what we see on the field,” said the coach, who is 28-13 in his fourth season at Leeds and won a state title at Clay-Chalkville in 2014. He’s 131-65 in his 17th season as a head coach. “We have to play great defense, be solid in the kicking game and let it play out from there.
“We’ve been fortunate to be in the playoffs and we play some of the top teams in 5A and all those kind of things. Those experiences allow you to learn how to handle weeks like this, with all the publicity and excitement. Our goals remain the same.
“This is a nearby rivalry and they’ve got a really great team. It’s another big game for Leeds and that’s always fun.”
