Fans at SEC tournament chant ‘Brandon Killer’ at Alabama star freshman

As Alabama men’s basketball jogged out onto the court about an hour before tipoff against Missouri, a group of Vanderbilt fans on the far side of the stands rose to their feet and identified 6-foot-8 star freshman Brandon Miller.

“Bran-don kil-ler,” two people chanted before another joined.

“You’re a murderer and you know it. … God is gonna judge you,” a man in a white Vanderbilt t-shirt and sunglasses yelled.

Other spectators sitting near the group told AL.com the ‘killer’ chant and variations of it continued throughout the Tide’s 72-61 Southeastern Conference tournament semifinal win. The group moved down into the student section during the Commodores’ semifinal matchup against Kentucky. When approached by, the group acknowledged they were the ones chanting but didn’t provide their names.

Miller and the Alabama basketball team have been the subject of controversy since the Jan. 15 shooting outside the Tuscaloosa strip. Two people, including former player Darius Miles, were indicted Friday on capital murder charges in the killing of Birmingham’s Jamea Harris, 23. Miller and freshman Jaden Bradley were present for the shooting, with Miller driving Miles’ gun to him while picking Miles up. Both Bradley and Miller were cleared of wrongdoing by Tuscaloosa investigators and the university.

“I mean I hear it, but I lean on my teammates,” Miller said when asked about the chants postgame.

Miller finished with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting with 12 rebounds and four assists. On Jan. 21, Alabama coach Nate Oats praised Missouri athletics for removing a spectator who yelled a remark relating to Miles and Harris.

“Sometimes college students don’t understand the severity of things,” Oats said at the time.
