Broadway in Birmingham: ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ ‘Hadestown,’ more in 2023-2024

Enduring characters from “To Kill a Mockingbird,” such as Atticus Finch, Scout Finch, Mrs. DuBose and Boo Radley, will be on stage this year in Birmingham, and we can’t wait to see who’s playing Atticus.

Aaron Sorkin’s theater adaptation of Harper Lee’s iconic novel is coming to town in November, courtesy of the Broadway in Birmingham series. The play, directed by Bartlett Sher, was a hit on Broadway during its run from 2018 to early 2020. Actors such as Jeff Daniels and Ed Harris starred in the production as Atticus, and the play spun off into a national tour with Richard Thomas in the lead role.

Eight performances of “To Kill a Mockingbird” are planned for Birmingham, Nov. 14-19 at the BJCC Concert Hall downtown.

“Mockingbird” is one of five shows announced this week for the 2023-2024 Broadway in Birmingham series, which runs from October 2023 through May 2024. “Mockingbird” will be joined by four musicals: “Mean Girls” (Oct. 17-22, 2023), “Aladdin” (Jan. 24-28, 2024), “Hadestown” (March 19-24, 2024) and “Pretty Woman” (April 30-May 5, 2024).

Casting hasn’t been confirmed for the fall and winter legs of the “Mockingbird” tour, and it’s unclear if Thomas will appear in the play during its run in Birmingham. A publicist for the Broadway series says an announcement on the cast is expected this summer. “To Kill a Mockingbird” was nominated for nine Tony Awards during its run in New York City, and Celia Keenan-Bolger won the 2019 award for her portrayal of Scout.

Right now, Melanie Moore is playing the role of Scout on the national tour. Mary Badham, who famously portrayed Scout in the 1962 movie version, is currently in the tour in the role of Mrs. DuBose, the Finches’ mean-spirited neighbor. (See more on the current touring cast here.)

“To Kill a Mockingbird” was shuttered on Broadway during the coronavirus pandemic and returned in October 2021 at the Shubert Theatre. After a few months, the show went on hiatus and never came back, amid a controversy with producer Scott Rudin, who faced allegations of abusive behavior. The decision for Broadway didn’t affect the national tour, however. As of Saturday, the tour is near the end of its run in St. Louis and moving to Baltimore on March 14. “Mockingbird” then travels to cities in Florida, South Carolina, Texas and more.

Here’s more information on the next season of Broadway in Birmingham. All shows will be presented by American Theatre Guild at the BJCC Concert Hall in the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. The concert hall, which seats about 3,000 people, is off 11th Avenue North, between 19th and 22nd streets North.

“MEAN GIRLS” (Oct. 17-22, 2023)

Based on the 2004 comedy movie starring Lindsay Lohan, the stage version of “Mean Girls” features music by composer Jeff Richmond, lyrics by Nell Benjamin and a book by Tina Fey. Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois,” the show’s website says. “How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung.” The Broadway production of “Mean Girls” closed in March 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic.

“TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD” (Nov. 14-19)

Set in the fictional town of Maycomb during the 1930s, “To Kill a Mockingbird” tells the story of Atticus Finch and his family as he defends a Black man against an undeserved rape charge, and his kids against prejudice. Aaron Sorkin’s version deviates from the original storyline — and prompted a lawsuit from Harper Lee’s estate — with its updated (and less noble) take on the character of Finch, an upstanding white lawyer who takes on the racially charged court case in small-town Alabama. Sorkin’s script also expands the role of Calpurnia, the Black housekeeper for the Finch family, and gives her a stronger voice about social issues and injustices of the time. Sorkin’s interpretation of “To Kill a Mockingbird” prevailed — the lawsuit was settled — and the show quickly became a smash on Broadway.

“ALADDIN” (Jan. 24-28, 2024)

Based on the 1992 animated Disney movie, “Aladdin” features a book by Chad Beguelin, music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Beguelin. The storyline, set in the fictional Arabian city of Agrabah, focuses on a poor young hero who finds a magical lamp and is granted three wishes by the genie inside. Aladdin also finds himself romancing a princess and fighting an evil foe. Famous songs from the movie and musical include “Friend Like Me” and “A Whole New World.” The show is currently playing on Broadway and remains a hit.

“HADESTOWN” (March 19-24, 2024)

“Hadestown” is based on a 2010 album of the same name by singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell. The musical “intertwines two mythic tales — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife, Persephone — as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back,” the show’s website says. “Hadestown,” with music, lyrics and a book by Mitchell, was developed for the theater and directed by Rachel Chavkin. The musical, which won eight Tony Awards in 2019, is currently playing on Broadway, as well.

“PRETTY WOMAN” (April 30-May 5, 2024)

The musical is based on the 1990 hit movie, a romantic comedy that starred Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. The stage version of “Pretty Woman” features music and lyrics by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, and a book by Gary Marshall and J.F. Lawton. The storyline remains the same, focusing on a vivacious call girl who’s hired by an uptight executive. He needs a companion for several events during a week in New York City, but their relationship grows beyond a mere business arrangement. “Pretty Woman” had a Broadway run in 2018-2019.
