Alabama parents charged in death of infant boy who died from ‘methamphetamine toxicity,’ authorities say

The parents of an infant boy who died last year were arrested today in connection with his death.

Three-month-old Greyson Randal Gray died May 5, 2022. Authorities said methamphetamine was detected in his system when he was born.

On Friday his mother, 35-year-old Jessica Minor, and father, Randall Chester Gray II, 40, were arrested after a Tuscaloosa grand jury indicted them on charges of chemical endangerment of child.

On May 5, 2022, the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 14000 block of Shady Woods Lane in Coker on an unresponsive 3-month-old, said Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy.

The first responders began life-saving efforts, including CPR, until an ambulance arrived.

Greyson was taken to the hospital but did not survive.

Kennedy said the Violent Crimes Unit assumed the investigation at that time because the cause of death was not known. No physical trauma was found on the child, and interviews with the parents did not produce a cause of death.

The parents and all witnesses were formally interviewed, the scene was processed, and relevant evidence was collected, as is the case with all death investigations the VCU conducts, Kennedy said.

Investigators discovered that methamphetamine had been detected in the baby’s system when the child was born in February 2022. At that time, Minor was charged with chemical endangerment of a child and arrested on Aug. 17, 2022.

Under Alabama law, a person commits the crime of chemical endangerment of exposing a child to an environment in which he or she knowingly, recklessly, or intentionally causes or permits a child to be exposed to, to ingest or inhale, or to have contact with a controlled substance, chemical substance, or drug paraphernalia.

If serious injury results, the crime is a Class B felony. If death results, the crime is a Class A felony.

Minor was released from jail following her initial arrest after posting $15,000 bond.

Kennedy said the formal autopsy report after the child’s death was received from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences several months later. It listed the cause of death as “methamphetamine toxicity.”

Violent Crime Unit investigators then consulted with a series of medical experts, re-interviewed the parents, and presented the findings to the District Attorney’s Office and subsequent grand jury.

The father, Randall Chester Gray II, age 40, and the mother, Jessica Minor, were both indicted for chemical endangerment of a child resulting in death. Bond for each is set at $100,000 cash.

During the arrest, Kennedy said, suspected methamphetamine was found, and agents of the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force were called to conduct an investigation into the narcotics.

Gray was also charged with possession of controlled substance with intent to distribute.

Minor was charged with trafficking methamphetamine and had her bond revoked on her previous charges.

“Despite his short time on Earth,’’ the baby’s obituary read, “Greyson was deeply loved and brought immense joy to those around him.”
