Former Alabama police officer indicted for murder in 2022 death

A former Tuscumbia police officer has been indicted for murder in connection with the roadside death of a man last October.

WHNT is reporting that James “Jay” Steward, 34, was arrested Friday. Steward is being held in the Colbert County Jail without bond.

Police Chief Tony Logan, in an announcement, said the indictment stems from a “vehicle accident in October 2022 where a pedestrian was killed.”

According to Logan, a man later identified as Terry Hinton, 60, was struck on Hawk Pride Mountain Road in Tuscumbia at about 8:16 p.m. on Oct. 10, 2022.

The officer driving a Tuscumbia police vehicle, identified as Steward, was taken by Keller EMS to a nearby landing zone at the New Bethel Elementary School. He was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital, WAFF reported at the time.

Hinton was pronounced dead at the scene. He was remembered by friends as a generous man who loved dancing.

Logan said “our thoughts and prayers” are with Hinton’s family and friends.
