Spring roundup: Hoover, Spain Park split pair of walk-off games

City rivals Hoover and Spain Park split a pair of baseball games on Tuesday and Wednesday with each team winning at home and via a walk-off final inning.

On Tuesday, Hoover edged the Jaguars 10-9 in extra innings as Camdyn Teague singled in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. The Bucs piled up five runs in the bottom of the seventh with Cade Carr doubling in a run to knot the game at 9.

Hoover got singles from Will Lawrence, Caid Finn and Teague in the seventh. Teague led the Bucs at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance.

Both teams tallied 11 hits in the high-scoring affair.

Spain Park scored four runs in the fifth inning with Richard Moon, Evan Smallwood and Cole Edwards all driving in runs.

Mason Blasche earned the win for Hoover, throwing two-thirds of an inning – striking out two. Starter Wes Carter allowed seven runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Alberto Gomez worked three innings in relief for the Bucs.

Spain Park’s James Battersby took the loss in relief allowing six runs on six hits over 1.2 innings. He struck out two. John Robert Thompson worked six innings as the Jaguars’ starter, allowing four runs on five hits with five strikeouts.

Edwards, Battersby and Jacob Tobias all had multiple hits for Spain Park.

On Wednesday, Spain Park repaid Hoover with a 7-6 walk-off win of its own at home. Matthew Widra drew a walk in the bottom of the seventh to drive in the game-winner.

Spain Park out-hit Hoover 10-6 on the day with Clay Spencer going 3-for-5 to lead the winners. Widra and Cole Edwards also had multiple hits for the Jaguars.

Tobias earned the win for Spain Park, allowing five runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in six innings.

Makale Holden gave up a run on three hits over three innings for Hoover. Andrew Pitts, Jackson Graber and Zac McGarity all worked in relief for the Bucs.

Blasche had a home run for Hoover while Teague and Carter Jackman had two hits each.

BASEBALL

Homewood 3, Pelham 2: The Patriots ran their record to 6-1 with the eight-inning win at home on Monday.

Pelham tied the game at 2 in the top of the seventh inning. Pelham threatened in the eighth, putting runners on first and second, but Homewood got out of the half-inning unscathed.

Tripp Gann led off the bottom of the eighth with a two-strike single. Brennan Wheat singled and Parker Sansing drove in Gann with the winning run with a single down the left-field line.

Levi Nickoli earned the win in relief of Jack Ross, who gave up a run on six hits over five innings.

Jackson Parris and Gann had a pair of hits each for the Patriots.

West Limestone 7, Lauderdale County 1: Andrew Abernathy gave up one bunt single in his complete-game win over Lauderdale County on Tuesday. Abernathy helped the Wildcats earn the road win, allowing one earned run.

Cooper Phillips went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead West Limestone, 8-3 on the year and winners of four straight. Keegan Laxson and Colin Patterson were both 2-for-4 in the win.

Two of West Limestone’s three losses came either in the final inning or in extras.

West Limestone beat Elkmont 12-2 at home on Monday with Patterson smacking a leadoff home run on his way to a 2-for-3 performance. Ian Burroughs was 2-for-3 with a triple and a double.

Phillips and Laxson were both 2-for-3 at the plate in the win.

Montgomery Academy 10, Brewbaker Tech 0: The Eagles got the rain-shortened win in the top of the sixth inning on Thursday.

Camp Shanahan went 3-for-4 with four RBIs for Montgomery Academy. Will Hardin went 2-for-5 with three RBIs and Bray Renfroe was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in. Parker Cook was 2-for-2 with three walks for the Eagles. Rick McBride collected two hits in four at-bats.

Beau Smith picked up the win on the mound, allowing two hits over five innings. He struck out one and walked two.

SOCCER

Hartselle 2, Buckhorn 1: The Tigers picked up the home win to improve to 6-2-1 on the season. Owen Bennich and Luke Minnon got the goals for Hartselle.

The Tigers play Friday and Saturday in the ASOF Tournament at Choccolocco Park in Oxford.

Trinity 10, Dale County 1: Fifth-ranked Trinity (6-4-1) got four goals from Jackson Champion and a hat trick from Will Owen in the win on Tuesday. Mac Davis scored two goals and Bo Stewart added one.

Champion also had three assists in the win. Davis had two and Kip Brown had one.

The Wildcats blanked B.T. Washington-Tuskegee 12-0 on Monday with Champion recording four goals in the home win.

Davis scored a pair of goals for Trinity. Kip Brown, Will Owen, Norris Pemberton, SJ Han, Grayden Flowers and Lawson Roth each also scored a goal. Flowers had three assists while Brown, Davis, Garrison Gulledge and Carter Younger added one apiece.

Cal Bennett, Carter Younger and Julian Lee combined for the shutout.

Hoover 4, Tuscaloosa County 0: The eighth-ranked Class 7A Bucs scored all four goals in the first half in the Area 5 win at Tuscaloosa County.

Sam Whitlock got Hoover’s first goal on a corner kick from Patrick Anderson. Graham Houlditch got the second goal and Peyton Argent’s free kick pushed the lead to 3-0. The final goal came on a cross from Henry Patterson to Houlditch.

Geraldine 4, St. Bernard 1: Charles Gill had seven saves in the second half, eight overall, in the road loss on Tuesday.

Emmanuel Santiago-Silva scored for St. Bernard (2-4).

Alabama Christian 4, Prattville Christian 3: Cade Segars scored two goals in the Panthers’ season-opening loss at Alabama Christian on Tuesday.

Cohen Palmore scored a goal and Jacob Hollon had an assist in the loss.

Montgomery Academy 10, Russell County 0: The Eagles got hat tricks from Brewer Welch and Lucas Rizzo in the game, halted in the 50th minute of the match when the 10th goal was scored.

Welch and Rizzo also had assists in the win. Win Berry scored a pair of goals and contributed an assist.

Jacob Stubblefield, John Allen and John Allen Lachney also scored goals for Montgomery Academy. Holt Speir and Bobby Eskridge had two assists apiece. The Eagles also got assists from Ethan Yi and Lachney.

TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 6, Trinity 3: Montgomery Academy knocked off Trinity on Tuesday to improve to 6-1 on the season.

Montgomery Academy picked up wins in singles play at No. 1 with Whit Davis beating Timothy Hornsby 6-0, 6-1; at No. 4 as Jackson Brown beat Hudson Cornett 6-1, 6-0; at No. 5 with Ford Morano beating Trevor Wilson 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 11-9; and at No. 6 with Anton Yang defeating Grant Speagle 6-1, 6-1.

Trinity won the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches with Samuel Treadwell beating Charlie Hill 1-6, 6-1, 10-6 at No. 2 and James Treadwell beating John Alford 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3.

At No. 1 doubles, James Treadwell/Samuel Treadwell defeated Davis/Hill 6-3, 6-3. Trinity’s Alford/Brown beat Hornsby/Cornett 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles and Ron Sharma/Morano defeated Wilson/Speagle 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 3 doubles.

GIRLS

SOCCER

Trinity 10, Dale County 0: The Class 4A No. 8 Wildcats notched their second straight 10-0 win with the Area 2 win on Tuesday. Cameron Stanley recorded a hat trick while Hastings Avant, Ella Wiswall and Rebi McLemore had two goals each.

Avant and Wiswall had an assist each. Trinity also got a goal from Emily Teel and Ella Hale had an assist. Keepers Mary Collin McDuffee and Rissie Price combined for the shutout.

On Monday, Trinty blanked Booker T. Washington-Tuskegee 10-0 with McLemore scoring a hat trick plus one in the Area 2 win at home. McLemore’s four goals led the onslaught by the Wildcats that included a pair of goals from Wiswall.

The Wildcats also got goals from Teel, Ella Hammonds Shanahan, Emma Reed and Francie Morris. Juju Bishop had two assists.

McDuffee got the shutout in goal.

St. James 4, Pike Road 1: Junior Katie Brightwell scored all four goals on Thursday as Class 1A/3A No. 10 St. James beat Pike Road at Carlisle Field.

Brightwell’s first goal was unassisted, with Natalie Barton, Mary Grace Hixon and Addison Barber had one assist each for the winners.

On Monday, St. James and No. 4 Houston Academy battled to a 2-all tie at the Trojans’ Carlisle Field. Brightwell scored both goals for the winners. Barton and Hailey Vance had assists.

Montgomery Academy 10, Russell County 0: The Eagles blanked Russell County on Tuesday at Seale.

Sophia Cho scored four goals in the win and Mary Elizabeth Cole had three. Hayes Jenkins scored twice for Montgomery Academy. Bae Corley also scored for the Eagles.

Jenkins had five assists for the winners. Valentina Rubio, Cho and Cole also registered assists.

West Morgan 7, West Limestone 1: The Rebels improved to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in Class 4A Area 7 play with the win at West Limestone in Lester on Tuesday. West Morgan led 5-0 at halftime.

Brandy Hernandez scored four goals in the win. Madison Parker scored twice and had three assists. Alexandra Rodriguez also scored for West Morgan.

Hoover 10, Tuscaloosa County 0: The Bucs rolled past Tuscaloosa County on the road on Tuesday to pick up an Area 5 victory.

Nneka Udeh scored a hat trick for Hoover. Brooklyn Gernenz, Julie Cooke, Elise Marquardt, Sage Thomas, Peyton Davis, Allie Sanderson and Brooke Nettles all scored a single goal in the win.

St. Bernard 3, Geraldine 1: The Saints ran their Class 1A/3A Area 7 record to 2-0 and overall mark to 2-4 with the win on the road on Tuesday.

Madilyn Kerber scored a pair of goals in the second half and had a first-half assist on Amelia Tafazoli’s goal in the win.

Avery Hines had an assist and goalkeeper Violeta Castro Calavia had five saves for St. Bernard.

Prattville Christian 3, Stanhope Elmore 0: Avery Rogers scored a pair of goals to lead the Panthers past Stanhope Elmore on Thursday at 17 Springs in Millbrook.

Bella Carothers also scored for Prattville Christian. Emily Branch had an assist in the win. Kendall Jordan recorded the shutout for the 2-0 Panthers.

On Tuesday, PCA edged Alabama Christian 3-2 as Rogers found the back of the net with less than a minute to play in the Panthers’ season-opener.

Carothers and Ella Pegg had goals in the win, with Pegg also recording an assist.

Fort Payne 4, Oxford 1: Fort Payne won its Class 6A Area 13 opener at home on Wednesday and improved to 5-9 on the season.

Avery Chadwick put the Wildcats on the board first with an assist from Katie Hernandez. Kinsley Worthey, Allie New and Emma Crow also scored for Fort Payne.

Collyn Brewis had five saves in goal.

SOFTBALL

Madison Academy 5, New Hope 4: Cat Schreiber went 2-for-3 and earned the win in the circle with nine strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

Memphis Houston went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Mya Western also homered for Madison Academy. Abby Boyd and Rachael Andrews finished 2-for-4 at the plate.

Alma Bryant 11, Mary G. Montgomery 2: The Hurricanes scored 11 runs on 11 hits in the win on the road on Thursday.

Emma Hudson, winning pitcher Gail Wisher and Madelyn Ladnier had multiple hits for the winners with Hudson going 3-for-4 on the day with a home run in the seventh inning.

Wisher picked up the win in the circle, allowing two runs on seven hits over seven innings. She also struck out six Vikings.

On Monday, Alma Bryant scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to edge St. Paul’s 9-7 on the road.

Ana Acree smacked a three-run home run to give Alma Bryant the lead. She also earned a save working in the circle in the seventh. Karen Wisher got the win, pitching two innings in relief.

Hudson went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Hurricanes. Karen Wisher, Acree and Ladnier all had multiple hits in the win.

Baker 9, Alma Bryant 3: Baker picked up a Class 7A Area 1 win, topping the Hurricanes thanks to a seven-run third inning.

Baker got three home runs in the game, one each from Jaicee Massey, Kaylee Shelly and Madelyn Burton. Massey went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Shelly went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Burton was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Gracie Cook earned the win, allowing three runs on four hits in six innings. She struck out two with no walks.

Gail Wisher took the loss for Alma Bryant, allowing nine runs – two earned – on eight hits over 2.2 innings.

Emma Hudson went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.

Baldwin County 10, Elberta 1: Madilyn Byrd struck out 17 Elberta batters to boost the Tigers to the win on Thursday. The right-hander allowed no runs on two hits with no walks.

Madisyn Willliams went 2-for-3 to lead Baldwin County at the plate. Byrd, Williams, Payton Boyington and Emma Weatherford all had RBIs in the Tigers’ four-run fifth inning. Brooke McGowin singled in a run in the first.

Kendal Helton threw five innings, allowing eight hits and nine runs while striking out two with no walks.

On Tuesday, Baldwin County blanked Robertsdale 9-0 with Byrd throwing a complete-game shutout. McGowin went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs – including a grand slam – for the Tigers. McGowin’s homers came in the third and fourth innings.

Byrd struck out 11, allowing two hits over seven innings for Baldwin County. Madisyn Williams had two hits and an RBI for the winners.

Breckyn Bowles took the loss for the Bears, allowing three runs on two hits over two innings.

Satsuma 4, Theodore 2: Winning pitcher Anna Jo Bonds contributed a pair of hits to her cause as the Gators beat Theodore on Tuesday. Bonds also had an RBI. She improved to 9-2 in the circle, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and five walks in six innings pitched.

Kaeden Enzor scored two runs for Satsuma (16-5) and Belle Sheffield walked three times and scored a run.

Lauren Dickinson led the Bobcats with three hits. Bayleigh Davis allowed three runs, one earned, over 5.2 innings. She struck out four and walked three.

Mary G. Montgomery 2, Satsuma 1: The Vikings picked up the home win as Alaina Holliman drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning on Monday.

Breleigh Corley led Mary G. Montgomery with three hits. Makayla Baumgartner earned the win, allowing one unearned run with 12 strikeouts, five hits and no walks over eight innings.

Belle Sheffield (7-2) took the loss for Satsuma, giving up one earned run over 7.1 innings, striking out six and walking one. She allowed seven hits. Kaeden Enzor had a pair of hits and Madison Medley scored the run on a bunt by Ashleigh Parker.

Hoover 8, Tuscaloosa County 7: The Bucs edged Tuscaloosa County on Wednesday, scoring the game-winning run on a walk-off error in the bottom of the 12th inning.

Hoover (10-3) gave up five runs in the 11th, but McKenzie Stribling singled in two runs to cap a five-run bottom of the inning to tie the game again at 7. Bella Foran homered for the Bucs in the inning.

Starter Kaitlyn Raines went seven innings in the circle for Hoover, allowing two runs off nine hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Olivia Christian and Emily Sims pitched in relief with Sims getting the win in 1.1 innings.

Left-hander Alyssa Faircloth allowed two runs on six hits over nine innings for Tuscaloosa County.

Hoover’s Carolyn Hecklinski and Stribling had multiple hits as the Bucs recorded 11 on the day.

Tuscaloosa County had 13 hits with Kensley Spann, Holly Beth Brooks, Alana Spann, Karlie Beth Beasley and Maci Humber finishing with multiple hits each.

Hartselle 3, Hoover 2: Blayne Godfrey smacked a solo home run in the top of the 10th inning to give the visitors the win over Hoover on Tuesday.

Lindsey Westhoven had two hits, including a home run for Hoover. Ki Davis and Carolyne Hecklinski also had multiple hits for the Bucs.

Starter Olivia Christian gave up three runs on six hits in 10 innings, striking out seven.

Athens 12, Hazel Green 1: The Eagles smacked three home runs and had a pair of doubles in the rout of Hazel Green at home on Tuesday. Athens had 11 hits, scoring six runs in the first inning and four in the sixth.

Haley Waggoner, Mya Clark and Payton Matherne had home runs for the winners while Cori Campbell and Caitlyn Tedford had doubles.

Clark earned the win in the circle, giving up one earned run on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks over six innings.

Kailey Hyatt took the loss, allowing six earned runs on four hits in one inning.

Payton Pike was 3-for-3 with a run scored for the Trojans and Mariah Bazile went 2-for- 2 in the loss. Raegan Wall had a double.

Hazel Green 11, Ardmore 2: After a scoreless first inning, the Trojans put at least one run on the board the rest of the way – four in the top of the sixth – on the way to the road win on Thursday. Hazel Green pounded out 14 hits to five for Ardmore.

Leadoff hitter Raegan Wall had two hits, including a triple, in five at-bats and scored four runs for Hazel Green. Mackenzie Bowling was 2-for-6 with three RBIs, Mariah Bazile went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and Mason Quinnie had two hits in four at-bats with two RBIs. Briley Zimmerman also went 2-for-4 for the Trojans with an RBI. Payton Pike was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Kailey Hyatt picked up the win in relief, striking out one and allowing one hit over two innings. Quinnie started, working 1.2 innings allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts.

Ardmore had three doubles in the loss with one each from Sara Sanders, Alaina King and Addison Mikel. King was 2-for-4, Sanders drove in a run and Ella Singletary went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Mikel took the loss in the circle, giving up three runs – two earned – in two innings in relief. Mikel allowed four hits and had one strikeout with one walk. Singletary allowed three earned runs on five hits as the starter. She struck out four and walked two in three innings.

TENNIS

Montgomery Academy 9, Central-Phenix City 0: The Eagles were perfect in the win over Central-Phenix City on Wednesday, winning every match 8-0. Montgomery Academy is 7-1 on the season.

In singles, Gabby Barrera beat Libby Goodman at No. 1, Jenna Chandler beat Callie Schofield at No. 2, Mae Mae Voltz beat Anastasia Horning at No. 3, Kareena Singh beat Allyssa Brown at No. 4, Lola Campbell beat Julia Ruiz at No. 5 and Anna Powell beat Ava Jane at No. 6.

In doubles, Barrera/Chandler beat Goodman/Schofield at No. 1, Voltz/Singh beat Ruiz/Horning at No. 2 and Lillian Cameron/Campbell beat Jane/Brown at No. 3.

On Tuesday, Montgomery Academy swept city rival Trinity 9-0 at Lagoon Park.

Barrera beat Margaret Roby 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Other singles winners were Chandler over Kensley Williamson 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2; Voltz over Kingsley Johns, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3; Singh over Aniston Skipworth 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4; Campbell over Sally Warren 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5; and Marianna Lassner over Henlee Gunter 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.

In doubles, Barrera/Chandler beat Johns/Skipworth 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1; Volz/Lassner beat Roby/Williamson 6-1, 6-1 at No.2; and Campbell/Singh beat Warren/Reese Patterson 6-1, 5-7, 10-5 at No. 3.
