Washington state 8-year-old abducted from mall in 2018 found in Mexico

An 8-year-old girl abducted from a Washington state mall in 2018 was found in Mexico over four years later, federal authorities confirmed, according to reports.

Local authorities in Michoacán were able to locate her in February. Special agents recently escorted her back to the U.S., according to reports from CBS News and ABC News. The location isn’t being disclosed to maintain privacy.

Richard A. Collodi, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Seattle field office, released a statement, saying “For more than four years, the FBI and our partners did not give up on Aranza. Our concern now will be supporting Aranza as she begins her reintegration into the U.S.”

A 4-year-old Aranza Maria Ochoa Lopez was kidnapped from a Vancouver, Washington mall on Oct. 25, 2018. She was under a supervised visit with her biological, non-custodial mother, Esmeralda Lopez-Lopez.

Authorities confirmed Lopez-Lopez took the girl to Mexico. She was arrested in September 2019 in Puebla, Mexico.

While Aranza’s whereabouts were unknown, she was believed to be somewhere in Mexico. The FBI had offered a $10,000 reward for information on the little girl’s whereabouts.

Lopez-Lopez pleaded guilty to first-degree custodial interference, robbery and second-degree kidnapping. She was sentenced to 20 months in prison in 2021, according to reports.
