Family sought for Alabama prison inmate who died over the weekend

Authorities have released the name of an inmate who died over the weekend at William Donaldson Correctional Facility and are searching for his relatives.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the inmate as Bobby Ray Bradley. He was 69.

Bradley was found unresponsive at 8:02 a.m. Saturday in his bed in a dormitory. He was pronounced dead at 8:15 a.m.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said the inmate was being treated for multiple medical ailments and his death is believed to be of natural causes. An autopsy showed no signs of trauma or foul play.

Bradley was serving a sentence of life without parole for a 1989 first-degree sodomy conviction out of Calhoun County. He received the life sentence as a habitual offender, court records show.

His body his ready to be released for burial but Yates said all attempts to identify and locate family have failed.

According to a friend, Bradley’s family is from Piedmont. His mother, Bertie Bradley, died more than 10 years ago.

Bradley reportedly has a son, Dewayne Bradley, but authorities have not been able to locate him.
