Tuesday at 7p.m. Alabama Appleseed Center for Law and Justice will host their Second Chance Double Feature at Birmingham’s Sidewalk Cinema.

The feature will consist of two documentaries that tell the stories of men who were sentenced to a lifetime in prison but were freed after working with Alabama Appleseed: Love Without Parole and 188 Years: Life After Life Without Parole.

“The evening will feature two documentaries profiling men who were sentenced to die in Alabama’s unconstitutional prisons and their stories of hope and a second chance at life,” reads a release from Alabama Appleseed.

In Love Without Parole, lead producer Greg Womble and coproducer Elaine Witt tell the story of Appleseed client Michael Schumacher who was sentenced to life without parole in Bessemer’s Donaldson Correctional Facility after a nonviolent robbery in his early 20s.

Schumacher was sentenced under Alabama’s Habitual Felony Offender Act (HFOA), otherwise known as the “three strikes law.” That act increases punishments for repeat offenders, even if their crimes are nonviolent.
