Argument over cell phone at Pelham hotel leaves 1 dead, 1 jailed

A weekend argument at a Pelham hotel left one man dead and another behind bars.

Pelham police and fire medics were dispatched at 4:45 a.m. Sunday to Extended Stay America at 101 Bishop Circle on a report of a shooting.

When they arrived, they found Deon Levonte King-Smith suffering from a gunshot wound. The 32-year-old North Carolina man was pronounced dead on the scene.

Nehemiah Scroggins, 39, is charged with murder and menacing. He was taken into custody quickly after the deadly shooting.

Police said the gunfire followed an argument over a cell phone.

Scroggins remains held without bond in the Shelby County Jail.
