NFL Combine: How the state players performed on Sunday

Sixteen other Alabama running backs tackled the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine this century before Jahmyr Gibbs, and none ran it faster than he did on Sunday.

Gibbs posted a 4.36-second showing in the 40 as the running backs and offensive linemen wrapped up the on-the-field drills for this year’s combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Sunday.

Gibbs supplanted the 4.45 seconds of Kenyan Drake in 2016 at the top of the Crimson Tide’s time chart for the 40 at the combine.

Gibbs is tied for the fourth-fastest 40 for an Alabama player regardless of position. Wide receiver Henry Ruggs III ran the 40 in 4.27 seconds in 2020, wide receiver Julio Jones recorded a 4.34 in 2011, cornerback Tony Brown had a 4.35 in 2018 and cornerback Anthony Averett posted a 4.36 in 2018.

Gibbs ranked second-fastest among the running backs on Sunday, with Texas A&M’s Devon Achane clocking in at 4.32 seconds. Overall at the 2023 combine, Gibbs’ 40 tied for seventh-fastest.

Running backs and offensive linemen were on the field on Sunday, and the players had the opportunity to participate in the 40-yard dash, vertical jump, broad jump, three-cone drill and shuttle run and work in position drills under the guidance of NFL coaches and scouts while being scrutinized by league talent evaluators.

A rundown of how each player with Alabama football roots performed (with top-five finishes noted) on Sunday in the measured drills includes:

Troy center Jake Andrews (Stanhope Elmore): 5.15-second 40-yard dash, 26-inch vertical jump, 8-foot, 6-inch broad jump and 4.73-second shuttle run. Andrews did not participate in the three-cone drill.

Auburn running back Tank Bigsby: 4.56-second 40-yard dash, 32.5-inch vertical jump and 9-foot, 11-inch broad jump. Bigsby did not participate in the three-cone drill and the shuttle run.

Alabama tackle Tyler Steen: 29.5-inch vertical jump, 9-foot, 1-inch broad jump and 4.59-second shuttle run. Steen did not participate in the 40-yard dash and three-cone drill.

The players will have the opportunity to participate in the bench press on Monday morning. In the bench press, each player does as many repetitions as he can with a 225-pound weight bar.
