New UAH parking lot to accommodate private student housing development near campus

A 511-vehicle parking lot will be constructed on the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus to accommodate a nearby private student housing development.

The parking lot will be south of Holmes Avenue and west of Jordan Lane. It will be developed by Capstone & Boaz, LLC, which is developing a student-housing apartment complex adjacent to the UAH campus and near McThornmor Acres, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places last year.

Residents of the historic neighborhood – which was once home to scientists involved in NASA’s Apollo program during the 1960s – spoke out against the complex when it was before the Huntsville Planning Commission late last year.

The proposed student apartment complex is on a 4.33-acre site on the south side of Holmes Avenue and west of Austin Drive that was home to Trinity Presbyterian Church.

No one spoke against the parking lot when it was before the commission of Feb. 28. The parking lot will be connected to the current UAH Greek Village, according to a representative from Schoel Engineering, which is also involved in the project.

The lot will be landscaped and lighted to UAH standards, tying to the future location, with connections to nearby roadways. The parking would be east of the UAH Fitness Center.
