Mobile’s water utility is warning residents to take precautions when using Montlimar Creek for recreational purposes after 95 gallons of wastewater overflowed into it on Friday.

According to the Mobile Area Water & Sewer System (MAWSS), the sanitary sewer overflow happened at 1551 Azalea Road due to a “contractor’s failure to properly seal” a manhole during repair and rehabilitation work to the system.

MAWSS reports that the contractor has since sealed the manhole and the overflow has stopped.

Dr. Kevin Philip Michaels, the Health Officer for Mobile County, advises residents to take precautions whenever they encounter standing water that might have accumulated as a result of the overflow. Those who come in direct contact with the untreated sewage are advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.
