A man died Thursday night after the car he was driving left the road and overturned before catching fire and landing in a creek in Bibb County, authorities said Friday.

Ernest R. Mealer Jr., 53, of West Blocton, was driving a 2015 Dodge Dart around 7:54 p.m. Thursday on Bibb County Road 9 when the car veered off the road and struck two embankments, said Sgt. Jeremy Burkett with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

The Dart then overturned and erupted in flames before landing in a creek near Vernon Town Road, about three miles north of Brent, said Burkett.

Further information on the incident was unavailable as state troopers continued to investigate.
