Antoine Davis finishes just short of Maravich’s record

Detroit Mercy basketball star Antoine Davis came up just short in his pursuit of the all-time NCAA scoring record on Thursday.

Davis, the son of former Alabama player and UAB coach Mike Davis, scored 22 points in the Titans’ 71-66 loss to Youngstown State in the Horizon League quarterfinals on Thursday. That left Davis with 3,664 career points, three short of Pete Maravich’s NCAA record 3,667, which has stood since 1970.

The 6-foot-1 Davis came in averaging more than 28 points per game this season, but went just 7-for-26 from the field and 4-for-16 from 3-point range against the top-seeded Penguins. Detroit Mercy finishes the season at 14-19, and with a losing overall record won’t be eligible for any postseason tournaments.

Davis’ point total came in 143 career games spread over five seasons, with an extra year granted by the NCAA amid the COVID-19 pandemic. By converse, Maravich averaged 44.2 points in 83 games over just three seasons, as freshmen were not eligible to play varsity basketball until two years after he graduated.

Davis — the two-time Horizon League Player of the Year — did finish his career with an NCAA record 588 3-pointers, including 159 this season. With former St. Peter’s star Keydren Clark, he is one of two players in NCAA men’s basketball history with 3,000-plus points and 500-plus steals.
